Features

ZenBusiness stands out from some of its competitors due to how modular its plans are. Any of the features available in higher-priced plans are available at lower tiers (including the free plan) for an additional charge.

The Starter plan from ZenBusiness includes only the actual LLC filing with the Maine Department of the Secretary of State, Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions, excluding the state’s charges for the certificate of formation ($175) and other documents such as the annual report ($85). New LLCs that are starting from the ground up are better served by the company’s Pro offering that includes an operating agreement, an EIN and Worry-Free Compliance (included for the first year with Starter and $199 per year thereafter).

The Pro plan charges extra for access to ZenBusiness’ document template library and site hosting, a domain name and business email, all of which are included with the Premium package. None of the LLC formation plans come with registered agent service, which costs $199 annually as an add-on. Other extras are fast filing for $79, a business license report for $99 and a certificate of good standing for $100.

Pricing

The value of ZenBusiness’ Starter service is diminished somewhat by the cost of the add-on services your company may require such as an operating agreement for $125 or an EIN for $99. The Pro package ($199 a year plus state fees) includes both, along with faster processing and compliance protection ($199 a year after the first year with Starter). However, it charges extra for document templates ($99), website ($15 a month), domain name ($35 a year) and business email ($25 a year).

All these features are packaged with ZenBusiness’ high-end Premium offering that costs $474 including state filing fees. However, Premium subscribers may still find themselves paying for added services from the company such as e-commerce for their site ($279 a year) and tax services (from $49 a month).

Customer Service

ZenBusiness customer support staff can be reached by telephone or live chat from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT Monday to Friday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. You can also contact support by email, which the company attempts to respond to within one business day. Self-support options include FAQs and a knowledge base.

Reputation

ZenBusiness claims to have helped more than a half-million businesses get started since its founding in 2017. The company has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, and it is highly rated by customers posting reviews on Trustpilot. The service is known for being easy to use and responsive to customer requests.

Features

Bizee features a wide range of à la carte add-ons for its two lower-priced plans and a Premium plan that includes everything, though in many cases the add-ons are less expensive.

Bizee also features three core plans with escalating features, starting with a free plan with a fairly generous suite of features, making it a suitable choice for small business owners looking for basic LLC services.

Beyond what you need to file for your LLC, Bizee’s free Basic plan also includes free registered agent service for a year. You also get unlimited name searches, so you can find the ideal name for your business before you file without paying extra. In addition, Bizee features lifetime compliance alerts, so you’ll never forget required year-end filings or reports.

The Standard package gets you an EIN, operating agreement and the IRS form allowing your company to be taxed as an S-corp with all the tax advantages included. At the Premium tier, you also get a business email address and domain name, as well as business contract templates.

Pricing

Bizee’s pricing structure is very competitive, with core prices that roughly match its competitors and add-ons that are priced below many other similar features at other LLC companies. The Basic plan is free plus Maine’s state fees and a very attractive proposition given the generous feature set.

The Standard plan starts at $199 (plus the $175 state filing fee), and the Premium plan is $299 (plus the $175 state filing fee). Both include a free domain name and business email.

Customer Service

Bizee has a large resource center on its website where you can find answers to tons of common questions about starting an LLC or get tips on how to grow your business. You can also reach out to support by phone or through an email support form on the website.

Reputation

Bizee has a very strong online reputation on review aggregator sites. Its clients praise it for the speed and efficiency of its service and for its excellent customer service.

Features

Small business owners who are looking for more of an all-inclusive service with legal documents and support might want to consider Rocket Lawyer. With its memberships, create an unlimited number of documents and have them reviewed by one of the professionals at Rocket Lawyer. The memberships also provide you with an opportunity to receive quick responses if you have legal or tax questions. They also include Document Defense®, where you’ll be able to consult with an attorney to review contracts under dispute.

Rocket Lawyer provides Rocket Legal+ members with discounts on a variety of other business, tax and legal services such as hiring an attorney, working with a tax professional to file taxes, obtaining a trademark or registering an LLC.

Pricing

Rocket Lawyer is more expensive than many other LLC services. However, those with more complex tax or legal needs may find that the added cost is justified based on the additional features and discounts that come with it. All Rocket Lawyer customers must sign up for a membership (with a seven-day free trial available).

The Rocket Legal membership costs $39.99 per month. This is more expensive than the Rocket Legal+ membership, which costs $19.99 per month. However, with the Rocket Legal+ membership, you’ll be billed annually for the price for a full year instead of being able to cancel at any point. It also offers discounts on legal, tax and business services, which can add up quickly.

For example, retaining a legal professional costs just $74.99 per 15 minutes compared to the full price of $149.99 for 15 minutes with a standard membership. Filing an LLC is also free (plus the Maine state fee of $175) with Rocket Legal+, compared to the full price of $99.99 plus the Maine state fee for the standard membership.

Registered agent services also come down to $124.99 per year, which is half of the regular price of $249.99 that Rocket Legal subscribers would pay.

Customer Service

With phone, email and live chat support available, Rocket Lawyer customers can choose their preferred method of communication. However, support is only available on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT.

If you have a more general question or need support outside of business hours, you can check out the Frequently Asked Questions page. Here, find common questions about free trials, memberships and technical support, along with their corresponding answers.

Reputation

Rocket Lawyer was founded in 2008 and the company has established an overall positive reputation. It has earned an Excellent rating on Trustpilot from customers, with over 80% of reviewers giving it 5 stars.

Expert Take

Features

Filenow offers two core LLC formation plans that are clearly priced, with no hidden fees, and offer everything you need to create a new business. Some of the more basic features, such as filing the certificate of formation and performing a business name search in Maine, are included in the lowest-tier plan. This plan also includes electronic delivery of the documents from the state of Maine as well as electronic alerts about filing deadlines and other important dates to stay on top of.

Additional features in the Premium plan include a year of registered agent service, an EIN, a banking resolution, an operating agreement for your business and expedited 24-hour processing.

Pricing

When you’re looking for the best value for your business, Filenow may be a solid choice, depending on the specific features you need. For those who are looking to bundle registered agent services, an operating agreement and an EIN with the plan they choose, Filenow’s Premium plan, which costs $199 plus the Maine filing fee of $175, may be a good choice. This plan also includes additional features, such as a banking resolution and business contract templates. Filenow puts the total value of the plan at over $400.

However, those with more basic filing needs may find that a free plan from another LLC service provider offers a better value for their needs. Filenow’s cheapest plan costs $49 plus the Maine filing fee, but many of the features included with it, such as name searches, electronic document delivery and filing the certificate of formation for your business, are included with the no-cost plans from other providers.

Customer Service

Customers can contact a member of the Filenow customer service team by phone, email or chat. Filenow also offers 24/7 customer support, a service that is lacking in most other LLC service providers.

For more basic needs, small business owners can also use the frequently asked questions page to help them find the information they need quickly.

Reputation

Filenow does not have as many customer reviews as other companies. However, based on the reviews that are available, it appears that most customers are mostly happy with the company.

It has an average of 4.8 stars from Shopper Approved (with over 700 reviews), an average of 4.3 stars on Google (with nine reviews) and an average of 3.8 stars on Trustpilot (though, only based on two reviews).

Expert Take

Features

Beyond LLC registration, Inc Authority’s offering includes registered agent services and a business name check. Digital document storage and delivery is another advantage for busy entrepreneurs, ensuring you receive any formal correspondence for your LLC as quickly as possible.

The company also offers tax planning consultations and a business credit and funding analysis. If you’re an entrepreneur worried about money matters, these last two points may be of interest to you. For example, business credit can help you with expansion or provide an emergency cash reserve in case you hit rough waters financially (another reason to get a business bank account).

Pricing

Inc Authority boasts a lot of freebies: LLC registration, registered agent, 24-hour processing, website domain and email, and EIN. Keep in mind that the registered agent service is free for only one year. Additionally, an EIN can be obtained for free from the IRS.

Although Inc Authority’s LLC registration may be free of charge, you still have to pay the $175 Maine state processing fee, as is typical with all other providers that offer a free plan. Inc Authority tends to bury the lead on that info a bit. For any services you do pay for, the company offers a 60-day money-back guarantee.

Customer Service

Inc Authority’s team is available Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. PT. Email and phone support are available. However, on another part of the website, 24/7 support is advertised, making for confusing mixed messages.

The Inc Authority blog provides some helpful articles, but we didn’t find an extensive online knowledge base beyond this.

Reputation

Inc Authority’s Trustpilot presence is excellent, with more than 30,000 reviews and a near-perfect score. The company appears to have a BBB profile under the name Inc for Free. However, it’s not BBB accredited and has less than 100 customer reviews. Unfortunately, those few reviews add up to an F rating.

Learn more: Read our full Inc Authority review.

Pros & Cons
  • Tax planning consultations
  • Business credit and funding analysis
  • One year of free registered agent service
  • The “free” claims require reading the fine print
  • Lack of clarity regarding customer support

What Is an LLC Service?

An LLC service is intended to help business owners set up their LLC. While different LLC services vary in the specific services and features they provide, they all can assist you with filing the necessary paperwork with the Maine Department of the Secretary of State, Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions and making sure you complete the process as required. You do not have to use an LLC service to set up a limited liability company.

You could choose to hire an attorney or to complete the paperwork yourself, including the certificate of formation required by Maine, but these services offer competitive pricing and experience that many small business owners find beneficial. Moreover, most LLC services also offer additional features, such as registered agent services or compliance support, which are required by the state of Maine.

Learn more: For a step-by-step guide, read our walk-through on how to set up an LLC in Maine.

Maine LLC Requirements

Two critical steps are required prior to filing the official paperwork with the Maine Department of the Secretary of State, Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions to create your LLC:

  • Select a unique name. In addition to clearly representing the nature of your business, your LLC’s name has to be one-of-a-kind and within the parameters of Maine regulations. For example, the name can’t be vulgar or deceptive. The Maine Department of the Secretary of State, Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions website provides the Maine business search tool for confirming that your chosen business name is available.
  • Appoint a registered agent. A registered agent is a person or business entity authorized to receive legal and official correspondence from the state and other public and private parties. Maine regulations allow the registered agent to be any adult resident of Maine with a physical address in the state or a domestic or foreign entity with a physical address in Maine. The registered agent must be available to receive official correspondences at the stated address during normal business hours.

Once you’ve confirmed the LLC’s name and chosen registered agent, you’re ready to file the certificate of formation form with the Maine Department of the Secretary of State, Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions. The filing fee is $175.

LLCs must also file an annual report with the Maine Department of the Secretary of State, Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions within 90 days of the LLC’s formation and every two years thereafter. The fee for the initial and required periodic statement of information filings is $85.

Maine requires that LLCs have an operating agreement that lays out the rules governing the LLC. These include the names of owners and managers, profit distribution and the process for resolving problems. A carefully crafted operating agreement is especially important for multi-member LLCs (ones with multiple owners) to anticipate and mitigate potential conflicts.

LLCs should also request an EIN from the IRS, even though single-member LLCs without employees or excise taxes aren’t required to have one. EINs are used to pay the entity’s income tax separately from the owners’ filing. They also qualify for tax deductions that aren’t available when filing with a Social Security number, and they give the business more flexibility in hiring and determining the LLC’s structure.

After filing the certificate of formation and other paperwork with the Maine Department of the Secretary of State, Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions, the documents are reviewed by the office and, upon approval, the LLC becomes a legal business entity.

Finally, most Maine LLCs are required to file a beneficial ownership information (BOI) report with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network within their first 90 days of business. Beginning on January 1, 2025, this filing period will be reduced to 30 days.

How To Choose the Best Maine LLC Service

Which LLC service is best for you will come down in large part to what services you need, what your budget is and how much of the paperwork you’re willing to handle manually yourself. The more of the filing and paperwork you do, the less you’ll ultimately pay in most cases, though expert service can expedite the entire process.

Essential LLC Service Features

Regardless of which service you choose, you’ll need a handful of core services to set up your LLC and start operating your business.

  • State filing: The most essential part of creating a new LLC is filing the appropriate paperwork; in Maine, file a certificate of formation with the Maine Department of the Secretary of State, Division of Corporations, UCC and Commissions. An LLC service can complete forms and make sure all of the appropriate documents are accurate and properly submitted.
  • EIN/Tax ID: An EIN, which you can obtain through the IRS, is required to hire employees. An LLC service can guide you through the process and complete the application for you, so you can focus on other elements of your business.
  • Compliance: The best LLC services will file all the necessary reports to ensure your business remains legally compliant.

Packages and Add-Ons

Beyond the core features, there is a range of extras that many LLC services will provide, either as part of one of their plans or as optional add-ons.

  • Expedited filing: If you’re looking to get your LLC established quickly, many services will offer same-day processing or expedited shipping to get things moving quickly.
  • Website support: Many LLC services now offer website packages, often including a custom domain, website builder and business email, so you can establish your business online or start engaging in e-commerce.
  • Operating agreement: Maine requires an operating agreement, which acts as a sort of constitution for your business and can establish operating procedures and financial rules for your company.

Ease of Use

For LLC services, the key to ease of use is how much of the process a company will take off your plate and how effortless it makes the entire process of starting an LLC. The best LLC services will get some basic information about you and your business and then handle nearly all the administrative tasks, including filing and reporting. More importantly, they’ll complete and file everything accurately, so you don’t have to constantly go back and forth making revisions and wasting valuable time.

Customer Service

Given how important the LLC formation process is, and especially if you’re paying for ongoing support with compliance or taxes, customer support is extremely important. Ensure that the company you hire is available through your preferred channel of contact (email, phone or live chat), and consider other customer reviews online, which tend to heavily focus on the customer service experience.

The cost of an LLC service for Maine can vary quite significantly. While some providers offer free plans (before the $175 Maine filing fee), others may charge several hundred dollars for their services. In general, most providers offer several packages, and it is important to compare the features included in each of these packages to make sure you get the best value for the specific features your company needs.

For example, many free plans, such as the one from ZenBusiness, only include basic services such as filing the certificate of formation and name check services. However, some free plans, such as the one from Bizee, include a year of registered agent services, making them stand out as a good deal. If your business has more complex needs, then a more inclusive business formation plan that includes tax or legal consultations or discounts on trademarks or tax preparation, such as one from Rocket Lawyer, may be worth the added cost.
