Features

Mullvad VPN offers several features that can help protect your online privacy when using your iPhone. Signing up for the VPN is completely anonymous; you do not need to provide your name, email address or any other personal details to create an account. Mullvad VPN even encourages customers to pay for their service anonymously, using cryptocurrency or cash. Moreover, Mullvad VPN does not log any customer activity.

“I also like that it’s fully transparent through open-source code, which is great since everyone in the cybersecurity community can flag for potential vulnerabilities in its code,” said Seth Geftic, the Vice President of Product Marketing at Huntress. Geftic also said, “Mullvad also uses top-tier encryption (AES-256) and supports WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols, which are considered very secure and efficient. And it also offers features like DNS leak protection and a kill switch to protect your data if the VPN connection drops.”

Pricing

Mullvad offers a simple and straightforward pricing plan. It only has one plan option, which costs €5, or about $5.50 (depending on the foreign exchange rate). This structure allows for flexibility, as you aren’t locked into a plan for several months or years. The company hasn’t raised its rates since 2009 when it first launched. However, one downside of this pricing structure is that you won’t receive any discount if you are ready or willing to commit to a longer subscription term.

Customer Service

Mullvad’s customer service may not be ideal for many individuals and small businesses, particularly those based in the United States. The company only offers email support, and even then, will only respond to emails during normal weekday business hours (in Sweden, which is on Central European Time). There is also a general online self-help center, which includes some FAQs and links to guides on various topics, such as using the app, restoring your online privacy and improving your connection speed.

Reputation

Mullvad VPN was started in 2009 and has established itself as a top VPN service in the years that followed. “Overall, Mullvad has a pretty good reputation within the cybersecurity community for its privacy-first approach and transparency. While it may not have all the bells and whistles of some competitors, its dedication to privacy and security makes it stand out,” said Geftic.

Reviewers on Trustpilot seem to agree, giving the company an average of 4.1 stars. However, there are only 112 reviews, which is significantly less than some of Mullvad VPN’s competitors.

Features

“Proton VPN is much like a Swiss bank when it comes to VPNs—very secure and very private. It is also located in Switzerland, which has some of the top privacy laws globally,” said Erik Severinghaus, the founder and CEO of Bloomfilter. It doesn’t track the IP address of users or keep logs of any websites they visit. All Proton VPN apps are also open source, leaving their code accessible for others to analyze. Proton VPN also comes with an integrated kill switch so that you can quickly protect your address if the connection to the VPN is dropped.

A few other features that are included with all Proton VPN plans include DNS leak protection to keep your browsing history from being shared with your internet service provider, unlimited bandwidth and strong encryption. Proton VPN has more servers than most of the other VPN companies we reviewed. There are more than 6,500 servers in 112 countries, giving you flexible options when changing your location.

Pricing

Proton VPN has three different plan options, including a free version. However, Severinghaus cautions against placing too much reliance on the free version, equating it to “driving in the slow lane on a highway—speed and servers are limited.” The free plan also only allows you to use one device at a time, so it may not be a suitable option for those looking to protect more than just their iPhone with the VPN they select.

The two paid plans are a bit on the expensive side, especially if you opt for monthly billing as opposed to a longer subscription term. The VPN Plus plan includes the highest connection speeds, an ad and malware blocker, will work with streaming services, and includes a password manager. This plan costs $9.99 per month, but the price comes down to just $4.49 per month if you sign up for a two-year subscription.

The Proton Unlimited plan, which offers the most features, costs $12.99 per month with monthly billing, or $7.99 per month with a two-year subscription. It adds on to the features included with the VPN Plus plan, offering pass monitoring, two-factor authentication, more cloud and email storage and more email addresses.

Customer Service

Proton VPN only offers customer support by email or by filling out the support form on the website, powered by Zendesk. It is recommended to use the support form as your query will get to the correct department more quickly, offering a faster response time. While phone and live chat support are not available, Proton VPN does offer 24/7 support, though no response times are listed on the website.

For more general questions, you can also check out the self-help section of the website and browse through the available information. This information is organized by category, such as VPN features, streaming, download and installation and troubleshooting.

Reputation

Proton established its first service—Proton Mail—in 2014 to help improve online privacy. That service spurred the creation of Proton VPN to further enhance privacy and protect the journalists around the world who were using Proton Mail. Unfortunately, Proton VPN is not as highly rated as some other VPN services on Trustpilot. The company has only a 2.2-star rating with 467 reviews. Proton as a whole is more highly rated on G2—4.5 stars—though this score is only based on 11 reviews.

Features

When you’re looking to protect your internet history, IVPN is another top option to consider. Severinghaus said, “IVPN works fast and silently. It gives really good speeds and uses special anti-tracker technology to help you stay unnoticed online.” IVPN also offers a kill switch that will allow you to quickly disconnect from the internet should your connection to the VPN drop. It also does not keep logs or store any customer data.

IVPN uses an open-source application for iOS and other operating systems, providing transparency and enabling others to review the code for enhanced security. To further add to the privacy IVPN provides, users do not need to provide an email address when they register; it can be done completely anonymously.

Pricing

IVPN offers two different plans: IVPN Standard and IVPN Pro. Users can sign up for a one-week, one-month, one-year, two-year or three-year subscription, with greater savings over a longer term. IVPN Standard costs $2 for a one-week subscription or $6 for a one-month subscription. The price comes down to $140 for a three-year subscription, which works out to $3.89 per month. This plan includes the AntiTracker and all the standard protocols. It can be used on up to two devices simultaneously.

IVPN Pro costs $4 for a one-week subscription, $10 for a one-month subscription or $220 for a three-year subscription ($6.11 per month). The Pro plan comes with everything included in the Standard plan but also adds on multi-hop, routing your data through several servers for added privacy. The Pro plan also enables you to use IVPN on seven devices at the same time.

Customer Service

IVPN customer service can only be reached through email. While there is no option to connect with a live agent immediately, IVPN states that it responds to most emails within a few hours (though some responses could take up to 24 hours to be sent). If the email you wish to send to IVPN includes any sensitive information, you can download the PGP key through the website, which will encrypt the email for added security.

Reputation

IVPN is highly rated on both Trustpilot and G2, though neither rating is based on more than 20 reviews. It has an average rating of 4.5 on Trustpilot and an average rating of 4.2 on G2. While the relatively low number of customer reviews may lead you to believe that IVPN is new on the scene, the company has actually been in business for a decade and a half. It was started in 2009 as Privatus Limited and changed its name in 2023 to IVPN Limited.

Expert Take

Features

If security is of the utmost importance to your small business, then you might want to take a look at all the features offered by NordVPN. Many of these more advanced security features are included with the upper-tier plans, but even the Basic plan offers threat protection by blocking malicious domains and ads when you’re using the app.

The two upper-tier plans add on anti-malware protection, an ad and tracker blocker and more advanced protection when browsing online. These upper-tier plans also include a password manager to better protect your information and keep it secure. NordVPN’s server network also enhances its security and overall attractiveness. With more than 6,000 servers in over 100 countries, it boasts one of the largest networks out of all the VPN providers on our list. All three plans allow you to protect up to 10 devices at the same time.

Pricing

NordVPN’s monthly cost is comparable to what many other providers charge. It costs $12.99 per month for the Basic plan, $13.99 per month for the Plus plan and $15.99 per month for the Ultimate plan. If you’re willing to sign up for a two-year subscription, NordVPN becomes a much better value. The monthly cost drops down to just $3.09, making it more expensive than only four of the other providers on our list (with an extended subscription).

Customer Service

When you need support from NordVPN, you can connect with an agent 24/7 using live chat. Once you start a chat, you can indicate the general topic you need help with, and your conversation will be routed to the right department. If you’d prefer to send an email, NordVPN also provides email support. Alternatively, you can browse through the Solution Center to view setup tutorials, troubleshoot common issues, manage your payments and subscriptions or learn more about the service.

Reputation

Founded in 2012, NordVPN has more than a decade of experience helping individuals and businesses protect their privacy and security when using the internet. Thousands of users (more than 34,000) have taken the time to rate their experiences on Trustpilot. Of these reviewers, over 70% gave NordVPN a 5-star rating, earning the company an overall rating of 4.2 stars.

It is notable that over 10% of reviewers gave NordVPN only a 1-star rating for reasons ranging from customer service, issues with their account or service or difficulty canceling a subscription.

  • No cloud storage with lower-tier plans

Features

Surfshark’s three plan options allow you to choose the features most needed to protect your personal data or that of your small business when using your iPhone. All of the plans include an ad blocker, a cookie pop-up blocker, a masked email generator and a personal detail generator.

If you require more advanced features than these, then one of the higher-tier plans may end up being the best solution. These add-on services include real-time alerts for email, credit card or ID breaches, a private search tool and antivirus and webcam protection. The highest-tier plan will also remove your personal data from company databases and from people search sites.

Pricing

Surfshark’s pricing and overall value makes this VPN service stand out from others. However, if you want the best value, you’ll have to sign up for a one- or two-year subscription. When billed monthly, the base plan costs $15.45. However, this price drops significantly to $3.19 per month with a one-year subscription or $2.19 per month with a two-year subscription.

The savings are comparable for the upper-tier plans as well. For example, Surfshark One+ (the highest tier) starts at $20.65 per month with monthly billing. That price drops to $6.09 with a one-year subscription or $4.29 per month with a two-year subscription. Another thing that makes Surfshark stand out as such a valuable option is that you can use it on an unlimited number of devices at the same time.

Customer Service

Surfshark’s customer service team can be reached 24 hours per day, seven days per week by email or live chat. For many questions and issues you encounter, you may also be able to find the solutions or responses on your own through the help center. This center includes links for common questions and needs to help you make the most of your subscription.

Reputation

Despite being a newer company on the VPN scene (it was only founded in 2018), Surfshark has garnered a lot of attention and support from customers and professionals. It holds an average rating of 4.3 stars on Trustpilot, with over 22,000 customers sharing their opinions. More than 70% of reviewers gave the company a 5-star rating. However, nearly 10% of customers gave the company a 1-star rating, with many referencing issues trying to cancel their subscription.

Pros & Cons
  • Low monthly price with a one- or two-year subscription
  • More than 3,000 servers across 100 countries
  • No limits on the number of devices you can protect simultaneously
  • Pricey if you don’t sign up for at least a one-year subscription
  • No webcam on antivirus protection included with the base plan
  • Subscription prices increase after the initial term

Features

One feature that makes ExpressVPN stand out when compared to many other VPNs is its password manager. ExpressVPN Keys, which is included for free when you sign up for the service, allows you to store an unlimited number of passwords, credit cards or secure notes, keeping them secure yet accessible when needed.

When you need to log in to a website or complete a payment form, Keys will detect the required fields automatically and provide you with the option to have them filled in with a single click. You can also use Keys to help you create highly secure passwords, monitor for breaches when any of your passwords may have been compromised and make your online accounts more secure through two-factor authentication.

ExpressVPN offers many other features that you would expect from a quality service. It works on iOS as well as all other platforms, protects your personal data with AES-256 encryption, does not log your activities and can be used on up to eight devices at the same time.

Pricing

Unlike many other VPN companies that offer at least two plan options, ExpressVPN keeps things simple with just a single plan that includes all the available features. This plan costs $12.95 for a one-month subscription but comes down to $8.32 per month with a 12-month subscription. The month-to-month rate is mostly in line with what several other providers charge, but you won’t get as much of a discount for signing up for a full year of service as you might with others.

Customer Service

Customer service is available by email or live chat. Unlike many other providers, ExpressVPN does offer 24/7 customer support over chat, so you should be able to connect with a live agent and get your questions answered or your problems resolved in a timely manner. If you have a more general question, you may be able to find the answer yourself by browsing through the troubleshooting guides or setup tutorials available on the website.

Reputation

Founded in 2009, ExpressVPN is trusted by customers around the world. On Trustpilot alone, the company has more than 24,000 reviews with an average rating of 4.3 stars. More than 80% of reviewers gave ExpressVPN a 5-star rating, indicating their overall satisfaction with the quality of service they receive.

Features

Mozilla VPN users can protect up to five devices simultaneously. In addition to being supported by iOS, the VPN also works with macOS, Windows, Android and Linux operating systems. Mozilla VPN doesn’t place any speed limits or bandwidth restrictions on users, helping them maximize their internet activity while connected.

Once connected to the VPN, all of your internet traffic will be encrypted to keep you and your device secure. It also blocks ads and ad trackers, uses multi-hop to route you through an additional server for added privacy and delivers malware protection. Mozilla has over 500 servers across more than 30 countries. The app can help you by identifying the servers closest to you to provide you with a fast connection.

Pricing

Unlike some other VPNs, Mozilla VPN offers just one plan. If you choose monthly billing, you’ll pay $9.99 per month. Opting for annual billing with a year-long subscription will save you 50%, bringing the price down to $4.99 per month.

Customer Service

Mozilla VPN’s customer support is not as robust as that offered by other companies. There is no live chat and support does not appear to be available 24/7. Once you’re registered as a Mozilla customer, you can submit a support ticket through the app or online through the website. This may not be sufficient for many small business owners or individuals who need more immediate resolution of any issues they face.

Reputation

While Mozilla is more or less a household name, customers have mixed feelings about the company as a whole and its VPN services. Mozilla has only a 3.2 rating on Trustpilot. While we can’t find reviews directly related to Mozilla VPN on Trustpilot, the iOS app has only a 3.4 rating in the App Store. This is based on over 400 reviews, indicating that several customers are not happy with the VPN.

Features

Private Internet Access offers one main plan with the features most small businesses will need to stay secure online. Some of these key features include unlimited bandwidth, ad and tracker blockers, split tunneling and encryption. Private Internet Access also never tracks or records any data or history from its customers, keeping your search history and browsing data private. One other benefit of choosing Private Internet Access is that you can use the VPN on as many devices as you would like at any given moment.

Beyond all the features included in Private Internet Access’ VPN plan, customers may choose from one of its optional add-ons to better customize the plan to match their needs. These add-ons include antivirus protection and a dedicated IP address.

Pricing

As mentioned above, Private Internet Access only offers one comprehensive plan. So, there is no option to sign up for a free plan or a discounted option with more limited features. The VPN plan costs $11.99 per month, but as with many other companies, the price decreases substantially if you sign up for a subscription. A six-month plan works out to $7.50 per month and a two-year plan (with four additional free months) comes down to $2.03 per month.

The two add-on options available through Private Internet Access are also cheaper when you sign up for an extended subscription. With month-to-month payments, the antivirus protection costs $4.50 per month and a dedicated IP address costs $5 per month. These prices decrease to $2 and $4.25, respectively, with a one-year subscription, and $1 and $2.50, respectively, with a three-year subscription.

Customer Service

Private Internet Access offers 24/7 customer support through email and live chat. If preferred, you can also submit a support ticket through the website to share information about a specific problem you’re facing or a question that you need answered. Support is available in English, German, French and Romanian.

Reputation

Private Internet Access has been part of the VPN scene for over a decade. Overall, individuals and small businesses who have signed up for this VPN have been satisfied with the services they’ve received. The company has an average rating of 4.3 on Trustpilot, based on more than 10,000 reviews. Of these reviews, over two-thirds are 5 stars and about 10% are 1 star. Some of the 1-star reviews note issues with the 30-day money-back guarantee, connection speeds and customer service.

Features

CyberGhost offers a range of features to protect you and your privacy when browsing online. It does not keep any logs, won’t track your activities and provides monitoring for leaks involving your email address. Additional features, such as split tunneling and advanced encryption, further protect you and help you remain anonymous when online. CyberGhost has servers in more than 100 countries, providing you with flexible options about where to connect from. However, the company doesn’t disclose the specific number of servers it has.

CyberGhost also offers a 45-day money-back guarantee with all subscriptions of at least six months. If you want a little extra time to try out a VPN service before finalizing your decision, this may make it an appealing choice for yourself or your small business, as most other services only offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Pricing

There is only one plan available from CyberGhost. While this doesn’t provide you with as much flexibility to prioritize which features you want to pay for, it does simplify things when you’re going through the sign-up process. The plan costs $12.99 per month, which is on the pricier side.

However, if you sign up for a six-month subscription, the price drops to $6.99 per month and a two-year and two-month subscription costs just $2.19 per month. However, you will end up paying more per month after the initial two-year period. You’ll be billed the same $56.94 total, but it will only cover a one-year subscription.

Beyond its base VPN plan, CyberGhost also offers add-ons that could benefit your small business. One of these, which costs $5 per month, provides you with a dedicated IP address for the VPN. The other add-on is the CyberGhost Security Suite for Windows. If you are looking to protect a personal computer in addition to your iPhone, you may be interested in this extra, which costs $4.50 per month and includes Windows and antivirus protection.

Customer Service

You can get in touch with the customer service team using the live chat feature on the website. Chat support is available 24/7, allowing you to connect with a live agent whenever you encounter an issue or have an opening in your schedule. CyberGhost encourages customers to browse through the FAQs before contacting support, as many common issues and areas of need are addressed in this section of the website.

Reputation

Today, nearly 40 million customers rely on CyberGhost to protect their privacy and security when browsing online. The company, which was founded in 2011, maintains an overall high rating of 4.2 on Trustpilot. This rating is based on the input of more than 20,000 customers, giving you a solid understanding of how users view their experience and the overall value they receive from CyberGhost. While 80% of all reviewers gave the company a 5-star rating, only 8% gave it a 1-, 2- or 3-star rating.

Features

Those looking for the best VPN for streaming may want to consider hide.me. The VPN offers two different plans, a free plan and a Premium plan. Signing up for the Premium plan provides you with unlimited bandwidth, making it an optimal choice for streaming sports, TV shows and movies. Its 2,600 servers across 91 different locations will enable you to “appear” in the right spot to stream the shows or sports you want to watch. The Premium plan also includes a dedicated IP address, which can further enhance your streaming experiences.

Prioritizing the privacy of its users, hide.me doesn’t keep any logs or record personal information or payment information and encrypts your connection to the internet. You can use up to 10 devices simultaneously, making it easy to stream something on your phone or tablet while you safely browse the web or complete tasks for work.

Pricing

As mentioned, there are two plans offered by hide.me, the Free plan and the Premium plan. The Free plan is quite limited in features. You can only use it with one device at a time and can only choose from eight different server locations when accessing the internet. Speeds are also reduced on this plan, so it may not be ideal if you’re looking to stream a sports game or TV show.

The Premium plan, which includes all of hide.me’s features designed to enhance your streaming and browsing experience, costs $9.95 per month with monthly billing. Signing up for a one-year subscription works out to be $3.75 per month and a two-year subscription comes down to just $2.49 per month.

What Is a VPN on an iPhone?

A virtual private network, or VPN, sets up a secure and encrypted pathway between your iPhone and the internet. A VPN server can be used to reroute your internet traffic, which will disguise your IP address and keep your online activities private from hackers, ISPs, government agencies and other third parties.

Using a VPN on an iPhone offers several benefits:

  • Boost privacy and security: VPNs encrypt your internet traffic, making it unreadable to anyone who may try to intercept it. This includes hackers on public Wi-Fi networks, ISPs monitoring your browsing habits and government surveillance.
  • Avoid online tracking: VPNs help protect your privacy by hiding your true IP address, making it difficult for advertisers and other third parties to track your online activities and build a profile based on your browsing habits.
  • Bypass internet censorship: VPNs enable you to bypass internet censorship and access blocked websites by connecting to a server in a different country. This can be useful for accessing georestricted content, such as streaming services or news websites that are not available in your region.
  • Secure data transfers: Using a VPN on your iPhone is particularly important when transferring sensitive information, such as when conducting online banking or accessing confidential business files. The encryption provided by a VPN ensures that your data remains secure during transmission.
  • Improve network performance: In some cases, using a VPN may improve network performance by avoiding ISP throttling or congestion on heavily used networks.

How To Choose the Best iPhone VPN

An iPhone VPN can protect your privacy on the go and at home. However, because all VPNs are not the same, it is essential to do some research before making a decision. Here’s what you need to know about choosing the best one.

Essential iPhone VPN Features

  • Strong encryption: Industry-standard encryption protocols, such as OpenVPN and WireGuard, are a must-have to ensure security and privacy.
  • Strict no-logs policy: A no-logs policy assures users that the VPN provider doesn’t store any info on their internet usage, making it impossible for the provider to share their data with other entities, such as the government.
  • Kill switch: This feature automatically turns off your internet connection if the VPN disconnects, ensuring there are no data leaks.
  • DNS leak protection: DNS leak protection keeps browsing activity private and secure by safeguarding DNS queries.
  • IPv6 leak protection: IPv6 leaks can expose a user’s IP address and thus compromise their privacy. IPv6 leak protection is therefore another important feature to look for in a VPN.
  • iOS optimized interface: Look for a VPN app with a user interface designed specifically for iOS, offering a familiar and easy-to-navigate layout for iPhone users.
  • Touch ID/face ID integration: A VPN that integrates with iPhone’s biometric features such as Touch ID or Face ID for authentication adds an extra layer of security and convenience.
  • Home screen quick actions: Select a VPN that supports Home Screen Quick Actions, allowing you to perform tasks such as connecting to your most recent server or changing settings directly from the iPhone home screen icon.
  • Apple Watch compatibility: For those who use an Apple Watch, a VPN that offers compatibility or a companion app can be beneficial for easy control and monitoring of your VPN status.
  • iCloud sync: A feature that syncs your VPN settings across all your iOS devices through iCloud can be particularly useful for those invested in the Apple ecosystem.
  • Customizable control center module: A VPN that offers a module for the iPhone’s Control Center allows for quick access and toggling of the VPN connection without the need to open the app.

iOS Compatibility and Multidevice Use

Most iPhone VPNs also work on other iOS devices such as iPads and iPod Touch. Additionally, many VPN providers offer apps for non-Apple products, including Android and Windows devices, allowing you to secure multiple devices under a single subscription. However, some providers have protocols built for specific devices (for example, hide.me has Bolt for Windows).

Speed

When evaluating VPNs, it’s essential to consider the average download and upload speeds they offer to ensure an optimal browsing experience. Speed is crucial for a variety of online activities, such as streaming video, online gaming, video conferencing and file transfers. Fast speeds provide a seamless internet experience, while slow speeds can lead to buffering, lag and a frustrating user experience.

Fast VPN Speeds

A fast VPN should provide download speeds of at least 50 Mbps and upload speeds of 20 Mbps or more. These speeds are generally sufficient for most online activities, including HD video streaming and large file downloads. Faster speeds mean better user experiences, especially for those on high-speed connections.

VPN Throttling and Speed Reduction

It’s important to note that using a VPN can sometimes result in slower internet speeds. This is because your data must travel through the VPN server, which can add latency and decrease speed. The level of speed reduction largely depends on the VPN provider, server distance and network congestion.

Some VPNs also implement bandwidth throttling, intentionally limiting users’ connection speeds to manage server load or encourage users to upgrade to a higher-priced plan. However, many top-tier VPNs prioritize providing fast and stable connections without throttling.

To maintain fast speeds while using a VPN, consider the following recommendations.

  • Choose a VPN with a large server network: A VPN with a vast server network can distribute user traffic more efficiently, reducing the likelihood of server congestion and slow speeds.
  • Connect to a nearby server: The closer you are to the VPN server, the lower the latency and the faster the connection. Selecting a server in your country or a neighboring country can help improve speeds.
  • Use a VPN with WireGuard or similar protocols: WireGuard is a cutting-edge VPN protocol that offers faster speeds and improved performance compared to older protocols such as OpenVPN and IKEv2. Many top VPN providers now support WireGuard or have developed their own high-speed protocols.
  • Test different servers: If you’re experiencing slow speeds, try connecting to a different server. Some servers may be less congested or offer better routing to your destination, resulting in faster speeds.
  • Check your base internet speed: Your VPN speeds can’t exceed your base internet connection speed. Ensure you have a fast internet connection to make the most of your VPN’s capabilities.

Customer Support

Quality customer support is crucial when using a VPN. Look for providers with various support channels including email, live chat and ticket systems. Support that is 24/7 ensures you can receive assistance at any time, while comprehensive knowledge bases and FAQs can help you troubleshoot common issues independently.

Cost

Consider the cost of each VPN to help you choose the right one for your needs. Some VPNs offer a free plan, which may be sufficient for those with more basic browsing needs. However, many free plans only support one device and often reduce the speed of the connection, so you may decide that it is best to pay for a plan.

Many VPN services offer significant discounts for signing up for an extended subscription (usually a year or two). The monthly price can drop down by more than 50% (sometimes a lot more than this even), which can save you a lot of money in the long term.

However, the downside to this pricing structure is that you’ll be out a lot of money up front and will likely be out of luck if you decide that you aren’t happy with the service or no longer need it down the road. Though, most companies do offer at least a 30-day money-back guarantee, which can provide you with a little peace of mind should the service not live up to your expectations. Some VPNs keep their pricing structure more straightforward, charging the same price per month regardless of the subscription term.

Though free VPNs are available, they often fall short in terms of security, performance and other important factors. Users should expect to pay for VPNs on a subscription basis, typically monthly or annually. However, some providers even offer two- or three-year contracts. Standard iPhone VPN rates are around $7 to $10 per month if paid month to month, but users can save significantly by:

  • Opting for longer-term plans, such as annual and multi-year subscriptions
  • Taking advantage of VPN providers’ promotional offers, student discounts or seasonal discounts
  • Referring new customers to sign up for the VPN

There’s usually no difference in pricing for mobile VPNs compared to desktop computers, as most VPN providers offer multi-platform support within the same subscription plan. However, additional features such as a dedicated IP address, which provides you with a unique IP for enhanced privacy and access to certain services, may come at an extra cost.

How To Set Up a VPN on an iPhone

Using a VPN on your iPhone can provide added security, especially when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks, and can also help in accessing georestricted content. Remember, a VPN is just one aspect of online security and should be part of a broader strategy to protect your digital data.

  • Choose a VPN provider: Select a VPN service that suits your needs. Consider factors such as privacy policy, server locations and subscription fees.
  • Download the app: Visit the App Store on your iPhone. Search for the VPN service you chose and download its app.
  • Install the app: Open the downloaded app. Follow the on-screen instructions to install it on your iPhone.
  • Sign In: Once installed, open the app. Enter your login credentials if you already have an account, or sign up for a new account.
  • Configure VPN settings: After logging in, you might need to configure some settings. This could include selecting a preferred server location or adjusting privacy settings.
  • Activate the VPN: Look for a button to connect to the VPN, often labeled “Connect” or something similar. Press it to initiate the VPN connection.
  • Verify connection: Ensure your VPN is active. Most apps display a clear indicator when the VPN is connected, such as a change in color or a notification.
  • Browse securely: With the VPN active, you can now browse with enhanced security and privacy. The VPN encrypts your internet traffic, obscuring it from outsiders.
  • Disconnect when finished: To disconnect the VPN, return to the app and press the disconnect button. Remember to disconnect when you’re done to save on battery and data usage.
  • Update the app regularly: Keep your VPN app updated to ensure you have the latest security features and optimal performance.
