Wells Fargo Autograph Review: Why it Goes Everywhere I Go

Whether you’re an explorer, commuter or wanderer—anyone going somewhere can expect to be generously rewarded by the Wells Fargo Autograph® Card. Several cards offer bonus rewards for booking in their respective travel portals, but Autograph cardholders earn 3 points per dollar at restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans, 1 point per dollar on other purchases. It offers 3 points per dollar for purchases with travel agents, timeshares, discount travel sites and even campgrounds.

Whether at home or abroad, dining out won’t be an issue either since these purchases reap 3X points as well, and there are no foreign transaction fees. Commuters earn at the same elevated rate whether traveling by train, taxi or fueling up at the pump.

The welcome bonus is easily attainable: Earn 20,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months.

Often overlooked benefits, such as cellphone protection (up to $600 against damage or theft, subject to a $25 deductible) and an auto rental collision damage waiver, can save you money and heartache when the unexpected happens. I recently saved over $500 with cellphone protection when my phone accidentally went for a swim. The claims process was simple, and after my submission was approved, I quickly received a check.

Redeeming Rewards

Wells Fargo Rewards earned with the Autograph card can be redeemed for travel, gift cards, as a statement credit or at select online stores. You can also redeem your earnings as a credit toward a qualified Wells Fargo loan (like a mortgage or personal loan).

Wells Fargo entered the travel rewards space by announcing the introduction of points transfers when it launched the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Card (rates & fees). Both the Autograph card and the Autograph Journey offer cardholders the chance to transfer rewards to a budding list of airline and hotel loyalty programs.

Pro Tip
Wells Fargo allows you to redeem your rewards as cash withdrawals at ATMs. All you have to do is visit a Wells Fargo ATM to redeem rewards in increments of $20.

How To Maximize Wells Fargo Autograph Rewards

One of the best ways to maximize the Wells Fargo Autograph card is to take full advantage of its 3X earning categories with all your everyday spending. Consider these strategies to make the most of your Autograph card:

  • Consider making it the default payment method for your cellphone bill, streaming services and food delivery apps. You’ll also get cellphone protection when paying your bill with the card.
  • Add the card to your digital wallet so it’s easy to use for things like public transit, rideshare apps and other online purchases that fall under the 3X categories.
  • Book travel with the card to earn 3X rewards in this broad category.

Transfer Partners

One of the last large issuers to enter the travel rewards space, Wells Fargo introduced point transfers in 2024. Points transfer to all partners at a 1:1 ratio, except for Choice Privileges, which transfers 1:2. Here is the full list:

Airline Partners

Hotel Partner

You may have noticed there are no domestic airline partners listed above. Still, savvy travelers or those willing to invest a little time learning can utilize airline alliances to book domestic flights via international airline partners. For example, Autograph cardholders can transfer rewards to British Airways Executive Club and book American Airlines flights because the two carriers are part of the Oneworld alliance. Wells Fargo also shared that more partners will be added over time.

The Autograph card offers strong earnings in a breadth of categories, but watch out for limited transfer partners. While many cardholders will find adequate redemption options, others may prefer cards in other earning programs.

How the Wells Fargo Autograph Card Stacks Up

Wells Fargo Autograph® Card vs. Chase Freedom Unlimited®

One card that will give the Autograph a run for its bonus money is the Chase Freedom Unlimited®. It earns 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3% cash back on eligible dining and drugstores and 1.5% on all other purchases. The Autograph card offers more varied bonus categories, but the high base rate earnings of the Freedom Unlimited can add up fast.

The intro APR on the Freedom Unlimited beats that of the Autograph, as it’s longer and applies to purchases and balance transfers: Get a 0% introductory APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 18.99% to 28.49% applies. An intro transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, applies in the first 60 days of account opening. After that, a fee of either $5 or 5% of the amount of each transfer applies. The Freedom Unlimited doesn’t offer transfers to airlines and hotels unless its points are combined with a premium Chase card.

Wells Fargo Autograph® Card vs. Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card

If you want to go all in with Wells Fargo, the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card (rates & fees) could be the perfect partner with its unlimited 2% cash rewards on purchases. It also offers a 0% intro APR for 12 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers, then a 19.24%, 24.24%, or 29.24% variable APR applies. Balance transfers made within 120 days qualify for the intro rate and fee of 3% (min. $5) then a fee of up to 5% (min. $5) applies. Still on the fence? Take a closer look at our analysis of the Wells Fargo Autograph vs. Wells Fargo Active Cash.

Wells Fargo Autograph® Card vs. Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Card

If you want to take your travel earnings and redemptions to the next level, and you’re open to a moderate $95 annual fee, the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Card (rates & fees) may be worth considering. It earns 5 points per dollar on hotels, 4 points per dollar on airlines, 3 points per dollar on other travel and restaurants and 1 point per dollar on other purchases.

The welcome bonus has a much higher spending requirement, but if you can reach it with your typical spending, it could take some of the sting out of the annual fee. New cardholders can earn 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months of account opening.

As more of a true travel rewards card, the Autograph Journey offers common carrier travel accident insurance, lost baggage reimbursement, an auto rental collision damage waiver and trip cancellation/interruption coverage. It also includes a $50 annual statement credit with airline purchases of at least $50, covering some of the annual fee. Cardholders of the Autograph Journey can also transfer points to airline and hotel partners.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What credit score do you need for a Wells Fargo Autograph card?

Wells Fargo does not provide a credit score range needed for approval, but applicants likely need a good to excellent credit score to get the Wells Fargo Autograph® Card.

In the FICO scoring model, a good credit score is considered to be between 670 and 739, very good as 740 to 799 and exceptional as 800 and up. Making sure your credit score is very good or better will give you a higher chance of approval.

Is the Wells Fargo Autograph a cash-back card?

The Wells Fargo Autograph® Card earns rewards that aren’t exclusively cash back. Cardholders can redeem rewards for cash back, but rewards can also be redeemed for statement credits, travel, gift cards and when checking out with PayPal. Rewards can also be transferred to airline and hotel loyalty programs at a ratio of 1:1.

What is the limit on the Wells Fargo Autograph card?

Like other credit card issuers, Wells Fargo evaluates each applicant’s financial history. It will look at things like your annual income, housing costs, employment status and other personal information to determine your credit limit. However, the bank does specify a minimum credit limit of $1,000 for the Wells Fargo Autograph® Card. If you hold other Wells Fargo credit cards and want to increase the credit limit on your Wells Fargo Autograph® Card, you can call the customer service number on the back of your card to redistribute your credit limits.

Is it hard to get a Wells Fargo Autograph card?

The Wells Fargo Autograph® Card may be hard to get for those just starting out or who have limited credit history because it requires a score in the good to excellent range (starting at 670 in the FICO scoring model). If your credit score is lower than that, consider starting with one of the best beginner credit cards to help build credit.
