How It Works

Coverage provided by Medicare Supplement plans is standardized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Therefore, basic benefits within each of the 10 lettered plans are identical across insurers. Plans can differ in terms of their monthly premiums, which depend on how a provider sets its rates, and additional benefits providers choose to add to a given plan.

Humana’s Plan G is comprehensive, covering skilled nursing facility coinsurance, Part A’s deductible, Part B’s excess charges and foreign travel emergencies, according to Fred Roth, president of Humana’s Medicare Supplement Division.

Most of Humana’s Medicare Supplement policyholders have access to several add-on programs and services, such as the benefits listed below. (Availability varies by plan and state.)

  • SilverSneakers fitness program
  • Discounts on vision services, dental services and some prescription drugs (this benefit doesn’t replace Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage)
  • Meal deliveries after an inpatient hospital stay
  • 24/7 access to a registered nurse
  • Personal, secured page on Humana.com to view transaction history

The Cost

Humana’s average monthly premium for new members across all Medicare Supplement plan types varies depending on a person’s location, age, gender and specific needs. By enrolling in a plan during the Medigap open enrollment period, individuals aren’t subject to medical underwriting, which means no carrier, including Humana, can deny Medicare-eligible applicants, regardless of preexisting conditions, says Roth.

Humana has a history of stable premiums. “Historically, our base rate increases have averaged in the 4% to 5% range. For attained-age states, members historically have seen a 0% to 3% aging increase depending on their age,” he adds.

Humana offers estimates of preferred and standard rates based on a person’s age and gender. An individual is eligible for the preferred rate when they enroll during their open enrollment period and can receive the standard rate if they are eligible to purchase a Medigap policy after the open enrollment period ends. Standard rates are generally higher than preferred rates.

In 2025, Humana’s Plan G monthly premium is $241, according to the estimate provided by the CMS, which doesn’t include the required Part B premium ($185 monthly as of 2025). A High-Deductible Plan G from Humana in 2025 costs $67 per month, per the CMS.

What Experts Say

“Humana has a large infrastructure like many major carriers,” adds John O’Hara, president of NJ Life & Health Insurance Group. “While Humana offers competitive initial enrollment rates, it has introduced several in-state Part G plans under different Humana entities, such as Humana Achieve, offering the same service at competitive rates to new beneficiaries. Older plans may no longer be offered to new customers, which may result in higher rate increases for the members in the older plan over time.”

The Experience

Humana has a good debt rating and is able to meet its unsecured financial obligations and contracts, according to AM Best (A rating). The company has an A+ rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau, but receives a 1.5 out of 5 stars Trustpilot rating (based on more than 130 reviews).
