WorldTrips offers the best “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) travel insurance, based on our analysis.

No one knows what the future holds, so buying travel insurance with a “cancel for any reason” upgrade can be a smart move. Standard trip cancellation only pays out if you cancel for a problem listed in your policy, but CFAR travel insurance reimburses 50% or 75% of your nonrefundable trip costs if you scuttle a trip, no matter the reason.

For example, a can’t-miss event may arise that conflicts with your trip dates, or you may find out that rain is forecasted for your island dream vacation.

Our best “cancel for any reason” travel insurance rankings are based on cost, CFAR reimbursement levels and the time allowed to purchase CFAR coverage. But all of these policies also provide solid coverage for delays, interruptions, medical expenses and baggage.

Why You Can Trust Forbes Advisor

We scored policies based on cost, CFAR reimbursement levels and length of time you have to purchase CFAR coverage. To assess the cost of policies with CFAR, we analyzed travel insurance rates for seven different trips for a variety of traveler ages and trip costs. Our Expert Take

The Atlas Journey Elevate plan with CFAR stands out in our evaluation because it has the lowest average cost among the top-rated policies we researched and provides solid coverage across the board. Its average price based on five sample trips is $338. We also like the policy’s generous timeframe of 21 days for purchasing CFAR and 75% reimbursement level for CFAR.

This policy has superior medical evacuation benefits of $1 million per person and great medical expense coverage of $250,000 per person.

Other notable features include a short five-hour waiting period for travel delays with great limits of $2,000. Additional benefits include decent coverage of $600 for baggage delays and $2,500 for baggage loss per person.

Upgrades are available for adventure sports, pets and rental cars. Pet-related benefits are $500 in medical expense reimbursement for pets traveling with you. It pays $200 for boarding/kennel costs if you have to return home later from your trip than planned and your pet is left at home.

You can add an “interruption for any reason” upgrade with 150% reimbursement.

Our Expert Take

We like the Trip Protection Basic plan because it allows 21 days to buy CFAR—reimbursed at 75%—and has the second-lowest average price among top-scoring policies. Its Protection Basic plan’s average price based on five sample trips with CFAR is $397. We’re also impressed by its short waiting periods for delay benefits.

Travel delay and baggage delay benefits apply after just six hours, compared to 12 for many competitors. You also have a generous window to buy CFAR after making your initial trip deposit.

Travel medical expense limits of $100,000 per person are lower than some competitors, but you might find that is sufficient. Likewise, travel delay benefits are modest, with a maximum of $600. The Trip Protection Basic plan does provide decent medical evacuation coverage of $250,000.

Our Expert Take

We picked Faye’s plan because it reimburses 75% of insured trip costs for CFAR claims and has great rates. Its average rate based on five sample trips with CFAR ($405) is the fourth lowest among the 30 companies we analyzed. We also like that it includes $100,000 in non-medical evacuation benefits.

Other notable benefits: $250,000 per person in travel medical expense coverage per person and $500,000 in medical evacuation per person. Travel delay limits are great at $2,100 after a short waiting period of six hours.

Baggage insurance limits of $2,000 per person are decent, but baggage delay coverage of $200 is lower than many competitors.

We like that Faye creates a customized travel insurance policy based on the trip details you provide when getting a quote online. To further customize your policy, you can also choose from multiple coverage limits and add-ons. For example, if you buy the trip delay upgrade, you can boost trip delay benefits from $2,100 to $4,500.

You also get a great selection of add-on coverage, including adventure sports, pet, rental property and rental car benefits. Pet-related coverage includes $2,500 for medical expenses if your pet gets sick or injured while traveling with you. You also get $250 to help pay for your pet to return home if you’re hospitalized and $250 for extra kenneling fees if you arrive home later than planned. The rental car add-on provides $50,000 in coverage for theft and damage.

More: Faye Travel Insurance Review

Pros & Cons
  • You get up to $600 to help pay for associated expenses if you’re inconvenienced during your trip due to a qualifying flight delay, flight cancellation, delay at security or late hotel arrival.
  • Trip cancellation benefits apply if you’re laid off from your job and have been employed at the same place for at least a year.
  • Offers rental property coverage of $3,000 if you accidentally damage the property or its contents.
  • Shorter time period than many competitors to qualify for coverage of pre-existing medical conditions and to buy CFAR: 14 days within your first trip deposit compared to 21 days.
  • Missed connection coverage of $200 per person is low compared to most competitors.
  • “Interruption for any reason” upgrade not available.
Plan Details
  • The maximum trip duration is 180 days.
  • CFAR coverage does not pay for costs associated with travel arrangements that aren’t provided by your travel supplier, which is any entity or organization that coordinates or supplies travel services for you.
  • Your CFAR benefits won’t apply if your travel supplier didn’t provide the agreed-upon arrangements.
  • You can increase your trip cost up to 48 hours before your trip starts, as long as you haven’t already incurred a loss, filed a claim or purchased coverage with CFAR.
  • If you wish to decrease your trip cost, you can do so within 14 days of the policy purchase as long as you haven’t departed on your trip, incurred a loss or filed a claim.

Our Expert Take

Trawick’s Safe Travel AnyReason policy is an easy way to get CFAR coverage for certain travelers. It’s worth checking out if you’re buying travel insurance right after you book your trip, you’re planning a trip a few months in advance and you’re okay with bare-bones coverage.

It’s the only policy we’re aware of that includes CFAR coverage rather than offering it as an upgrade for an extra cost. We also like the price: its average cost ($452) based on five sample trips is the fifth lowest out of the 30 CFAR policies we evaluated.

Still, it’s important to note that you must buy the Safe Travel AnyReason policy within seven days of booking your trip, and your departure date must be at least 60 days from the policy purchase date. That differs from the way standard travel insurance policies work. You can usually buy a standard policy right up to your departure date. To get CFAR coverage added to a standard policy, you must buy it within a specified time frame, generally within 14 or 21 days from your initial deposit.

While the Safe Travels AnyReason plan may appeal to you if you meet the purchase time-frame requirement, it has very low coverage limits. It provides only $15,000 per person in medical expense benefits, compared to competitors that generally have $100,000 to $500,000. The policy includes $100,000 in medical evacuation benefits per person, again on the low side. Many top-rated policies have $500,000 or $1 million in medical evacuation coverage. Baggage insurance is okay at $500 per covered trip.

More: Trawick International Travel Insurance Review

Pros & Cons
  • Offers a medical expense upgrade that increases coverage by $50,000 to $65,000.
  • Baggage insurance is primary, meaning you first file a claim with Trawick, compared to some policies that require you to first file a claim with your home or renters insurance.
  • Provides flight AD&D coverage of $20,000.
  • Travel medical expense coverage has a $250 deductible.
  • Trip delay benefits are modest at $500 with a 12-hour delay.
  • Baggage delay benefits are low at $200 after a 24-hour delay.
Plan Details
  • Maximum CFAR benefit is $7,500.
  • Maximum trip cancellation benefit is $10,000.
  • Maximum trip length is 30 days.

Our Expert Take

We like the Travelex Ultimate policy because it has decent rates and a generous window of time to buy CFAR. Unlike some competitors that require CFAR purchase within 14 days of the initial trip deposit, Travelex allows a 21-day window for this upgrade, which helped the Ultimate plan earn a top score. Its average cost based on five sample trips ($530) is the 12th lowest among the 30 policies we researched. We also like that it has $1 million per person in medical evacuation benefits.

Additionally, we like that the policy has $250,000 in medical expense benefits per person. It includes a “hospital of choice” option, meaning travelers can select where they want to receive further treatment after being transported to the nearest adequate medical facility.

Travel delay benefits are also robust, providing $2,000 per person with a short waiting period of only five hours. You also get $500 per person for baggage delays, as well as $2,000 per person in baggage insurance coverage.

The Adventure Upgrade provides coverage for adventure sports and includes $100,000 in security evacuation benefits and $10,000 in search and rescue coverage. There is an optional medical expense upgrade that allows travelers to increase their coverage from $250,000 to $500,000. The Pet Care Upgrade provides $250 for pet boarding fees if a return home is delayed, along with $2,500 for medical expenses if a dog or cat gets sick or injured while traveling.

Other upgrades include an optional rental property security deposit upgrade, which reimburses up to $2,000 if a traveler damages a rental and loses their security deposit. There is also a “Cancel for Business Reasons” upgrade, which allows travelers to cancel their trip if they are unexpectedly required to work.

You can additionally opt for a baggage insurance upgrade, which increases limits by $3,000 and includes benefits such as $2,000 for sporting equipment rentals, $1,500 for sporting equipment delays and $2,000 for electronic and business equipment.

More: Travelex Travel Insurance Review

Pros & Cons

  • Decent missed connection benefits of $750.

  • Baggage delay coverage requires a 12-hour delay, compared to six hours for some competitors.
  • No “interruption for any reason” upgrade offered.
  • No non-medical evacuation without buying an upgrade.
Plan Details
  • You must buy CFAR 31 days or more before your departure date and purchase it within 21 days of booking your trip.
  • You’ll be compensated 75% of your insured trip cost, up to $10,000 per person.

  • Subsequent arrangements must be insured within 14 days of booking those arrangements.

Summary: Best “Cancel For Any Reason” Travel Insurance Ratings

What Is “Cancel for Any Reason” Travel Insurance?

“Cancel for any reason” insurance lets you cancel a trip for a reason not listed under your trip cancellation insurance and receive partial reimbursement. For example, if you get sick right before your trip and can’t go, that’s generally covered by standard trip cancellation coverage and you can make a claim for 100% reimbursement of the trip costs you lose.

But if you want the flexibility to cancel for reasons not listed in the base policy, CFAR can help.

You will generally be reimbursed for 75% of your prepaid, forfeited and non-refundable trip costs. The percentage for CFAR reimbursement will be listed in the policy.

To get CFAR travel insurance you’ll have to purchase a base travel insurance plan and add “cancel for any reason” coverage within a certain time frame after your first trip payment. This is usually 14 days but make sure to check your plan.

The deadline for adding CFAR will depend on the travel insurance company, and not all companies offer it. Being eligible to buy CFAR is one of the advantages of buying travel insurance right after you book a trip.

You generally have to cancel your trip no less than 48 hours before your departure. For example, if you’re leaving tomorrow and you want to cancel the trip today, you probably won’t be able to make a CFAR claim.

Make sure to read the policy’s fine print and know the deadline for canceling the trip if you buy CFAR insurance.

How Does “Cancel for Any Reason” Coverage Work?

What does CFAR do?

CFAR gives you the ability to cancel a trip for any reason and receive partial reimbursement.

How much money do I get back?

With a CFAR claim you get back only a portion of what you lose in prepaid and non-refundable deposits, usually 75%.

Can I buy CFAR at any time?

You generally need to buy CFAR coverage within two to three weeks after your first trip deposit by adding it to a base travel insurance policy. If you want to buy CFAR coverage, make sure to know the purchase deadline so you don’t miss it.

Can I cancel my trip any time and make a CFAR insurance claim?

You generally need to cancel no less than 48 hours before your departure in order to make a CFAR claim. Once you’re within two days of leaving on the trip, CFAR coverage generally ends.

How much does “cancel for any reason” coverage cost?

Expect CFAR to add an average of 50% to your travel insurance cost. In general, a CFAR plan will cost approximately 8% to 10% of your overall trip costs.

What Does “Cancel For Any Reason” Insurance Cover?

CFAR covers the prepaid, non-refundable trip expenses that you have insured. It reimburses you for a percentage of the total cost if you cancel the trip for a reason not listed in the base policy.

For example, using CFAR coverage you could make a trip cancellation claim because:

  • You’ve developed a fear of travel.
  • It looks too rainy or too hot.
  • You’ve seen bad reviews of your resort.
  • You’ve decided to visit family instead.
  • Your child care arrangements have fallen through.
  • You got into a fight with your travel companions.
  • Your pet has fallen ill.

If you file a CFAR claim, you can be compensated for the following types of trip expenses if you can’t get a refund for them:

  • Airfare.
  • Boat charters or rentals.
  • Concert tickets.
  • Day trip excursions.
  • Hotel accommodations.
  • Museum tickets.
  • Theme park passes.
  • Private or guided tours.
  • Spa services.

CFAR Limits and Exclusions

CFAR insurance won’t compensate you for refundable trip costs. And it generally won’t reimburse you for insured trip costs if you cancel less than 48 hours before your scheduled departure. You also have a limited time to buy CFAR: Typically, you must purchase CFAR coverage within 14 to 21 days of making your first trip deposit.

How Much Does “Cancel for Any Reason” Insurance Cost?

Travel insurance with “cancel for any reason” coverage costs an average of $622, based on our analysis using five sample trips for different ages of travelers.

Our research found that CFAR usually adds about 51% to the cost of travel insurance. But the extra cost for CFAR can vary significantly among policies. For example, we found a range from 18% to 98%. That’s $62 to $399 more to add CFAR to a base policy.

Is “Cancel For Any Reason” Travel Insurance Worth It?

I think CFAR plans are a good idea for travelers who have expensive trips that are planned well in advance of the travel dates. For example, if you are planning a safari for a year from now for a family of five people, then it is a good idea to buy coverage as a lot can happen over the next 12 months. The more you have invested and the longer the period of time before your trip, the more risks you incur. However, if you book a last-minute trip leaving in a week, the risk of you having to cancel is low so CFAR might not be worth the investment.

Joe Cronin, Forbes Advisor advisory board member

Here’s a look at how much you may get reimbursed by filing a CFAR claim: Let’s say you booked a non-refundable round trip plane ticket for $1,000 and five nights of lodging at $200 a night, also non-refundable. You would insure the trip for $2,000.

If you cancel your trip for a reason that’s not listed in your travel insurance policy, you would be out $2,000 without CFAR insurance. But a CFAR policy would reimburse you for a portion of the costs.

  • If you have a CFAR policy with 50% reimbursement, you would get $1,000 from a CFAR travel insurance claim.
  • If the policy has 75% reimbursement, you would get $1,500 back from a CFAR claim.

If the airline cancels my flight and I decide not to go on my trip, will CFAR reimburse my airfare?

– Riley M., Cincinnati, Ohio

Your airfare is only reimbursable under a CFAR claim if the airline, or another entity, doesn’t give you a refund. CFAR only pays out for non-refundable trip costs. Airlines are now required to provide cash refunds if they cancel a flight or cause a significant delay. In that case, CFAR would not apply because the airline would compensate you.

Yes, you can find policies that offer a choice of 50% or 75% CFAR reimbursement, though it’s not common. One example is  the Atlas Journey Elevate plan from WorldTrips.

Methodology

To find the best “cancel for any reason” travel insurance, we analyzed travel insurance policies that include “cancel for any reason” coverage. We scored 30 policies on the following:

Cost (80% of score): Average prices for CFAR policies are based on rates for five different trips for a variety of traveler ages and trip costs:

  • Couple, age 30 for a Mexico trip costing $3,000.
  • Couple, age 40, for an Italy trip costing $6,000.
  • Family of four for a Spain trip costing $15,000.
  • Couple, age 65, for an Italy trip costing $6,000.
  • Couple, age 70, for a Mexico trip costing $3,000.

CFAR reimbursement level of trip cost: (15% of score): Policies providing 75% reimbursement were awarded 10 points and policies providing 50% reimbursement were awarded 10 points.

Deadline to buy CFAR coverage (5% of score): Five points awarded if the qualifying purchase time is 20 or more days.

“Cancel for Any Reason” Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Will CFAR insurance get me a full refund if I cancel my trip?

No, CFAR travel insurance will not give you a full refund if you cancel your trip. Depending on your policy, you will usually be compensated 50% or 75% of your insured trip cost if you cancel within the mandated timeframe.

Is fear of traveling covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance policies don’t cover fear of travel. But with CFAR coverage it doesn’t matter what your reason is—you can get partial reimbursement of your non-refundable trip costs.

What if I don’t have CFAR but I want to cancel my trip?

If your reason for canceling is listed in the policy, you can make a trip cancellation insurance claim. Common acceptable reasons include a natural disaster or terrorist attack at your destination, suffering an injury before the trip, or needing to attend the birth of a family member’s child.

How does regular travel insurance differ from CFAR travel insurance?

CFAR is not a stand-alone policy like regular travel insurance. It’s an optional upgrade you buy when you purchase a standard travel insurance policy.

CFAR provides partial compensation. Trip cancellation insurance in a standard policy usually reimburses 100% or 150% of your trip costs. You can cancel a trip no matter what and be eligible for a CFAR claim. Standard trip cancellation benefits apply to specified problems listed in the policy, such as a medical emergency or severe weather at your destination. CFAR generally requires you to cancel at least 48 hours before your departure for benefits to kick in. Regular trip cancellation insurance generally allows you to cancel up to your departure.

Second, we also include links to advertisers’ offers in some of our articles; these “affiliate links” may generate income for our site when you click on them. The compensation we receive from advertisers does not influence the recommendations or advice our editorial team provides in our articles or otherwise impact any of the editorial content on Forbes Advisor. While we work hard to provide accurate and up to date information that we think you will find relevant, Forbes Advisor does not and cannot guarantee that any information provided is complete and makes no representations or warranties in connection thereto, nor to the accuracy or applicability thereof. Here is a list of our partners who offer products that we have affiliate links for.
