It’s time to go home. At its Upfront presentation, Netflix announced that Adam Sandler will reprise the titular role of Happy Gilmore in Happy Gilmore 2. (Subtitle suggestion: “Happier Gil-even-more.â€)
Rumors of the project started back in March 2024, when Christopher McDonald, the actor who played Shooter McGavin in the 1996 original, said on a radio show that the Sandman showed him a first draft of the potential sequel, but it felt like far from a done deal. Like, can you really trust a dude who eats pieces of shit for breakfast? A couple weeks later, Drew Barrymore straight-up texted the Sandman while she was shooting an episode of her talk show and confirmed with her “source†that the movie was in fact “in process.â€
This would be the Sandman’s third live-action sequel — after Grown Ups 2 and Murder Mystery 2 — and the first in which he revisits one of his early classic characters. There are no details yet about the plot, but considering where the original sits in the Sandman’s catalogue, oh yeah, lotta pressure. The Sandman’s gotta rise above it.
