Why Yes, It’s Been Agatha All Along

Marvel’s marketing team got the last laugh. We’ve known for a while now that a show about WandaVision’s nosiest neighbor, Agatha Harkness, was in the works. But the title kept changing, with past iterations including Agatha: The Darkhold Diaries, Agatha: House of Harkness, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and Agatha: The Lying Witch With a Great Wardrobe. At Disney’s 2024 upfront meeting with advertisers on May 14, it was finally confirmed that the spinoff’s name has been Agatha All Along. What, A:TLWWGW wasn’t catchy enough? Here’s what to know about the show, including who’s in the cast, when it will be summoned onto Disney+, and what magic is underfoot in the new trailer.

Who’s in the cast?

Kathryn Hahn will reprise her role as winking witch Agatha Harkness, who has been rendered powerless (for now …) by Wanda Maximoff, though we doubt she’s going to quietly live out the rest of her life as nosy neighbor Agnes. Patti LuPone and Aubrey Plaza are joining Agatha’s coven, while Emma Caulfield will reprise her role as Sarah Proctor (a.k.a. Westview neighborino Dottie). The full cast also includes Heartstopper’s Joe Locke, plus Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, and Debra Jo Rupp.

Conjure up the trailer(s).

Like the teaser, the new trailer for Agatha: All Along opens with Hahn in full Mare mode, until she’s broken out of the TV pastiche spell of WandaVision. This isn’t like that! No, Agatha: All Along is in the straight-up witch-story vein, like a Marvel-fied version of The Witches of Eastwick. There’s a coven that Agatha needs to assemble and sing to before she can regain her power, there are campy line readings by LuPone (“the Witches’ Road is a death wishâ€), there’s Florence Welch on the soundtrack, and Agatha is even granted a familiar (it’s a twink who is mysteriously only identified as “Teenâ€). The Witches’ Road seems to promise some scream-worthy horrors, but Harkness is still in good enough spirits to quip, “Last one there is a nice person.†Gonna be one campy Halloween season.

Who else is involved?

WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer is back as head writer and executive producer. “I remember Kevin [Feige] saying to me, ‘We really should think about an actual Agatha show,’†she recalled in a WandaVision Blu-ray featurette. “And I was like, ‘Where do I sign for that job?’â€

When will it premiere?

The first two episodes of Agatha All Along are due to drop on Disney+ on September 18.

So the title changes were all planned?

It sure seems like it. Based on posts on Marvel and WandaVision’s social-media accounts, this all seems to have been a cheeky way of building Agatha’s reputation as the one who’s “been messing up everything.â€

Is Agatha going to sing another song?

Well, LuPone did tell Deadline that the show is a “musical.†She did a little singing in the trailer, so God, we hope so.
