Reports and evidence of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s marital struggles keep getting louder. According to the latest in People, Affleck already moved his things out their home (which they’re selling) a few weeks ago. Not sounding too good over there, but don’t worry — a source said he “seems okay.†That source also added that Affleck has “been at his office every day and seems focused on work.†That’s been the line from Affleck sources since this saga began: Affleck isn’t drifting apart from his wife, he’s just been working. On what? The Accountant 2, the sequel to his 2016 action film about an accountant caught in the dealings of terrorist groups.
When Affleck wasn’t by his wife’s side at the 2024 Met Gala, which she co-chaired, a rep said he was stuck in Los Angeles shooting The Accountant 2. When we found out Affleck was living apart from Lopez in Brentwood, People implied he was only there “while filming his movie The Accountant 2.†And when Affleck was absent from the red carpet for Lopez’s Netflix film Atlas, once again, The Accountant 2 was the culprit. Lopez later said she wanted “to be with her children, family, and close friends†when she canceled her poorly selling world tour, but Affleck kept trucking right along on The Accountant 2. I know what you’re thinking, and I agree: This movie better be fucking good!
Now, I personally am not familiar with the Accountant Cinematic Universe. I like an action movie, but I do not want to watch one about an accountant and especially not one where Ben Affleck, uhhh, plays a character on the autism spectrum. (Many people apparently did — The Accountant earned $155 million and is probably airing on TNT sometime this week.) Vulture’s own review said The Accountant was “enjoyable enough,†which doesn’t exactly sell me. But if Affleck has been working so hard on the sequel that it drives a wedge in his star-crossed marriage, you can bet I’ll be seated for it.
Sure, there’s a chance Affleck hasn’t actually been laser-focused on The Accountant 2 because he’s having marriage problems, and this could just end up being a mid action flick marred by off-screen troubles. And that could still be entertaining too. But until told otherwise, I’m relying on Affleck and the team to deliver an absolute stunner. And if Bennifer is calling up two accountants of their own, then the movie better be worth it.
