Mom, the Janes are fighting again! Janeās Addictionās has canceled the remaining dates of their reunion tour after Perry Farrell was caught on camera punching Dave Navarro onstage. In the latest, Farrell issued an apology to his bandmates.
Iāve been caught swinging (punches)
September 14, 2024: At Friday nightās concert in Boston, Janeās Addiction singer Perry Farrell punched guitarist Dave Navarro on stage in the middle of a song, reports several outlets, including Rolling Stone. Footage from the concert shows Farrell walking up to Navarro as heās shredding on the guitar, and as he gets closer, he throws one punch on his arm before hitting him again. A crew member intervenes, and an agitated Farrell walks off stage. Audience members audibly wonder if that was āfor real.ā The concert ended after 11 songs and Eric Avery, the bandās bassist, apologized to the audience. Vulture has reached out to the band for comment.
Farrellās wife, Etty Lau Farrell, posted footage of the brawl on Instagram, explaining the situation from a different point of view. She wrote, āPerryās frustration had been mounting, night after night, he felt that the stage volume had been extremely loud and his voice was being drowned out by the band. Perry had been suffering from tinnitus and a sore throat every night. But when the audience in the first row, started complaining up to Perry cussing at him that the band was planning too loud and that they couldnāt hear him, Perry lost it.ā She declared Avery to be the winner of the fightā an unbiased decision.
Tension has reportedly risen since Janeās Addiction began their reunion tour in August. It was the first time the band (Perry, Navarro, Avery, Stephen Perkins) had all played together since 2010. The reunion was aligned with their first new song with Avery in 34 years. As for the rest of the tour? Janeās Addictionās next concert is on Sunday at Bridgeport. Vulture has reached out for comment on whether or not the show will go on. But if it does, it might be a little awkward.
This is going to ruin the tour
September 15, 2024: Surprising no one, Janeās Addiction is going to need at least one more day to squash this beef before performing together again. The band posted an apology/show cancelation Instagram Story Sunday (obtained by Page Six). āWe want to extend a heartfelt apology to our fans for the events that unfolded last night,ā they said. āAs a result we will be cancelling tomorrow nightās show in Bridgeport. Refunds will be issued at your point of purchase ā or if you purchased via a third-party reseller (StubHub, SeatGeek, etc.), reach out to them directly.ā Thoughtful of the band to explain how third-party resellers complicate things when a band starts trying to kick each otherās asses. Add it to the pile of reasons going to a concert in 2024 is so, so complicated.
The band un-reunites
September 16, 2024, 12:31 p.m.: Okay maybe itās going to take a little bit longer ā¦ Janeās Addiction is un-reuniting and generally not speaking to one another for a minute. āThe band have made the difficult decision to take some time away as a group,ā they wrote on social media. āAs such they will be cancelling the remainder of the tour.ā
The bandās official social media makes the decision seem even-handed and unanimous, but Dave Navarro issued his own statement putting the problems at Perry Farrellās feet. āDue to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour,ā he wrote. āOur concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs.ā The statement is co-signed by his bandmates Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins. Janeās Addiction have now canceled 15 stops of their planned tour.
Perry Farrell reflects
September 16, 2024, 2:16 p.m.: In a statement obtained by Vulture, Farrell apologizes for his actions. āThis weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Fridayās show,ā he said. āUnfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation.ā The statement does not really address what caused Farrell to reach his breaking point ā whether itās sound issues, as his wife claimed on Friday, or from āchugging wine,ā as he was reported to have been doing in Florida earlier in the week. Farrellās wife insists the wine is āmore of a prop nowadays.ā
