To quote Lorde’s song “Homemade Dynamite:†*explosion sound* Charli XCX detonated a pop bomb on June 20 that will have musical aftershocks throughout time. And during Pride Month. Lorde is on a remix of Charli’s “Girl, so confusing†off her recent album Brat. Two pop stars collaborating on a remix isn’t so surprising, right? After all, Charli just had another iconic alt-pop diva, Robyn, on her “360†remix! And that would be the case if the song wasn’t already about Lorde. The feature basically confirms “Girl, so confusing†is about Charli’s insecurity when compared to Lorde and the underlying tension in their relationship.
In the added verses, Lorde echoes a sentiment similar to Charli; they both feel insecure about their friendship. Lorde sings, “I was trapped in a hatred and your life seemed so awesome / I never thought for a second my voice was in your head / She believed my projection and now I totally get it /
Forgot that inside that icon there’s still a young girl from Essex.†If there’s one positive outcome from all of this, we got our first Lorde song since 2021 and possibly even more collaborations between them.
In a post on her public finsta, @360_brat, Charli teased the collab with a snippet of Lorde’s part, featuring storytelling lyrics that are equally as vulnerable as Charli’s on the original track. “Well honestly I was speechless when I woke up to your voice note,†Lorde sings. “You told me how you’d been feeling — let’s work it out on the remix.†Thank Beyoncé, that’s the way these two resolve conflict, but if there continue to be issues, we’d be happy to call in Dr. Orna.
