Update, 12:36 a.m.: Chappell Roan explained to Entertainment Tonight why she was yelling on the VMAs red carpet. Basically, all the yelling is extremely triggering. “This is quite overwhelming and quite scary,†she said. “I think for someone who gets a lot of anxiety around people yelling at you, the carpet is horrifying. And I yelled back. You don’t get to yell at me like that!†This reporter can confirm the incessant yelling of a red-carpet photo line is really stressful to be around, and that’s not even when they’re yelling at you personally.

Original story follows.

Give Carly Rae Jepsen a sword? She’s already got one. It’s Chappell’s turn! Chappell Roan showed up to the 2024 Video Music Awards with her loins girded and her sword unsheathed. She even brought her own carpet. Roan appeared on the red carpet with a sword, a Viking attendant, a coordinating rug, and without any patience for bullshit. A photographer shouted “Shut the fuck up!†at someone on the photo line. Could have been at another photographer, or a publicist, or at Roan herself. Roan immediately clapped back, yelling, “You shut the fuck up!†Then, “No. Not me, bitch,†when the man tried to respond.

Roan has been having a tough month dealing with her newfound megafame. In a recent Rolling Stone cover story, she said she’d acquired a stalker. She said she’s been ambushed at an airport by fans who figured out her flight details, and even kissed without her consent in August. The hurly-burly has caused Roan to hire security (which she said is “so lameâ€) and set boundaries with her fans. With all that context, the martial vibe of her VMA outfit makes a lot of sense. For Chappell Roan in 2024, being in public feels like a battle.
