Baby, lock them doors and turn the lights down low so you can shed a few tears — Yellowstone is wrapping up its final season this fall. Probably. The most popular show on the air will finally start airing again for the first time since January 1, 2023. What do you need to know about the upcoming second half of the show’s fifth season? Start with the brand-new teaser trailer, a release date, and whether or not there will be a sixth season. That’s all below, fella.
Hook up the trailer.
“Legacy, remember my name, ’cause you’re gonna see me hanging in the Hall of Faaaaaaaaaame,†John Dutton intones in the season-five trailer. Basically. Taylor Sheridan teases just enough Kevin Costner to keep us wondering how they’re going to send him out when the target is already on Jamie’s back. “Unlike you, I keep my promises,†Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton appears to threaten her adopted brother, portrayed by Wes Bentley. Oh, yes, oh, yes, they’re both reaching for the gun.
Give the first look a gander.
Paramount granted us our first look at the season on August 29. Notably not included in the photos is John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner. Due to a boatload of drama including scheduling conflicts, egos, and a four-movie franchise that already flopped, Costner’s not coming back. The photos also don’t include anyone at a funeral, so what they’re gonna do with Costner’s absence is still up in the air.
Is Yellowstone really ending?
Sorta, kinda? Paramount has said Yellowstone was done in the past with these episodes being the final gasp of the most popular show on TV. Then multiple outlets reported Paramount was considering renewing the show anyway. Currently, reports say Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser (Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler) are in talks to return. Costner, meanwhile, remains out. The show was already set to be finished, but it also runs contrary to previous reports that said there would be a sequel series, possibly starring Matthew McConaughey. So … what actually is happening? Your guess is as good as ours at this point.
When’s the premiere date?
One thing we do know for sure: Yellowstone will return on November 10 at 8 p.m. ET. Yes, that is just five days after the presidential election. At least it will make for a calmer topic of conversation at Thanksgiving.
