Notes on a Scandalous Novel

Ayelet Waldman
"How dare you insult genre writers?"

How dare you insult genre writers? Raymond Chandler is a genre writer. Ursula LeGuin is a genre writer. What genre are you talking about? Scuz-porn? A great genre writer embraces the confines and produces art. This is a piece of commercial tripe. And yes, people are buying it because they're stupid, and sheeplike. Sorry. I just can't engage in any way other than to reject the whole project. And every interview with that blithering ignoramus of an author affirms my belief that reading this book is a complete waste of time.
