We celebrate for lots of different reasons - like if we have won a game with a football team, if we got to a new level on a computer game or if it is our birthday!
Throughout the year different communities celebrate events and special days as well. In this video Pip and Declan find out about some of the different celebrations around the world.
MUSIC
A colourful pinata shaped like a donkey hangs from the ceiling. Pip comes in wearing a blindfold and holding a colourful pinata stick.
PIP: (SINGING A MEXICAN SONG) Dadadada dadada dadada ya!
DECLAN: Wow, Pip! This Mexican festival is class! Woah! What have you got there?
PIP: Well, this is called a pinata and it's filled full of sweets! I just need to break it open!
DECLAN: Are you sure that's a good idea?
PIP: No, it's a great idea! Would you hold it still, and I'll give it a whack?
DECLAN: Hang on a second! What if you miss, and then hit my head?
PIP: Good thinking! Go and get your bicycle helmet!
DING
NARRATOR: There are lots of different festivals and celebrations around the world that bring families and communities together.
Declan runs off to get his helmet. The narrator talks about celebrations while we see animations of someone with a pumpkin, people celebrating New Year, and someone with a Chinese celebration dragon.
NARRATOR: For example, in October and November some people celebrate Halloween. Or as some people call it, 'The Day of the Dead'. Islamic people have a special month once a year called 'Ramadan', where they eat hardly any food all day. It's very important to their religion and culture.
NARRATOR: At the end of the year we celebrate New Year, but we don't all do it at the same time. For example, Chinese New Year happens in January or February.
DING
Declan has his bicycle helmet on.
DECLAN: Woah! So many different celebrations! Okay Pip, I'm ready!
PIP: Okay, okay. I'm gonna hit it - you hold it still!
Pip hits the stick in the wrong direction a few times while Declan holds the pinata.
PIP: (SHOUTING) Did I get it?
DECLAN: Uh… I think you did!
Declan headbutts the pinata with his helmet and it bursts open and sweets fly out.
DECLAN: Ha ha ha! Fiesta! Amigo!
