King Alexander III was King of Scotland from 1249 until 1285. His unexpected death left Scotland without any heir to the throne. Nobody knew what would happen next.
Find out about King Alexander III of Scotland and how his death sparked the Scottish Wars of Independence.
NARRATOR:
The Wars of Independence King Alexander the 3rd 1241 to 1286
Are you sure of yourself? Are you confident? Let me tell you about a king who was very sure of himself
Alexander the 3rd was crowned King of Scotland when he was just seven years old
At the age of 10, he was married to an 11 year old English princess, Margaret
At her wedding, her father, the King of England, said something like:
KING EDWARD:
Say I'm your superior! Say I'm your king!
ALEXANDER III:No!
NARRATOR:
He was very sure of himself! Now that's confidence! England wasn't a problem for Alexander, probably because his wife was English…
…but Norway was a problem. The king of Norway ruled over the Western Isles, and Alexander wanted them. He was confident he could win against Norway.
Alexander's soldiers attacked the islands with such ferocity that in 1263 the king of Norway sent a large fleet of viking ships to attack Scotland.
Alexander's army defended Scotland at the Battle of Larks and afterwards Norway agreed to sell the Western Isles to Scotland. This was a big win for Alexander and Scotland.
Just when things were going so well, his first wife, Margaret of England, died.
Later, Alexander married again. He was so keen to visit his new queen for her birthday, he couldn't wait!
NOBLEMAN:Don't go your majesty! It's dark, it's stormy!
ALEXANDER III:Ach I'll be fine!
NARRATOR:He was too confident. His horse slipped and he broke his neck. Suddenly, by accident
Alexander was dead, and Scotland was without a King. Who would rule Scotland next?
Alexander's only surviving heir was his granddaughter Margaret. But she was only three! And lived in Norway.
King Alexander, who was so confident, was gone. Without him, Scotland wasn't confident about its future at all.

Who was Alexander III?
Alexander was a king who became famous for two things.
The first thing he was famous for was taking control of the Western Isles. Before Alexander, a lot of Scottish islands belonged to Norway.
In 1263 the Norwegian navy attacked Scotland at Largs but the Scots fought them off.
Later the King of Norway sold the islands to Alexander. Orkney and Shetland still belonged to Norway, though.
The second thing Alexander is famous for is dying. His early death was a disaster for Scotland.

How did Alexander die?
Alexander and his first wife, Margaret, had three children together. Margaret died in 1275. By 1284, all three of their children had died too.
This meant there was no heir to the throne to take over after Alexander died. In 1285 Alexander married again. His new wife was called Yolande.
On March 18th 1286, Alexander rode his horse to Kinghorn, Fife, to meet Yolande to celebrate her birthday. It was a dark, stormy night.
Alexander never made it. The next day he was found dead on the beach with a broken neck. He had fallen from his horse.
Scotland now had no ruler. The next person in line to rule Scotland was a three-year-old girl who lived in Norway - Alexander's granddaughter, Margaret, Maid of Norway.
