Hetty Feather's Diary: Suspicion

My name's Hetty Feather - and this is my diary.

There’s always something going on at Calendar Hall at the moment. It’s like living in a mystery story! But now Lady Grenford’s arrived, I feel nervous. How can anyone trust her again? I know I can’t.

I was talking to Agnes, Gideon and Jack at tea, and we can’t figure out why Mrs Calendar has agreed to let her stay after all the trouble she caused last time. This time, not even Mr Calendar’s here to keep a check on her.

I know Lady Grenford is elderly, and perhaps I shouldn’t be so suspicious, but I keep thinking she might cause even more trouble – for the Calendars and for us servants.

Tonight, I took her supper and I was so nervous before I went into her room the tray was almost shaking! Thankfully, Lady Grenford was tired, so at least I didn’t have to talk to her or answer any of her questions. I wish I didn’t have to serve her, but I don’t have a choice. While she’s here, I’ll serve her every day. Lucky me! As I went out of the room, I made sure I smiled at her and wished her goodnight.

With Lady Grenford, I always have to watch my step. I hope my future at Calendar Hall would never be at risk because of her. But I’m worried… What will Lady Grenford do?

I've finished my duties at Calendar Hall for now, so I've written some responses to your messages. Thank you so much for writing to me!

Two letters on parchment, text reads: Book reader dancer: I think that Lady Grenford is really old and needs somewhere warm and proper to stay. I believe she may have been with Monty when he stole it, I think she wants to tell you where it is so she can see it one last time before she dies. Dear Book reader dancer, Thanks for your letter. I agree –it’s only right that Lady Grenford is being cared for if she’s in need! But knowing Lady Grenford, she also likes to make trouble. I just hope it doesn’t involve me – or the Dawn Star! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Two letters on parchment, text reads: U17682826: Don't trust Lady Grenford, she just wants money. What was Mrs Calendar thinking letting Lady G in Calendar Hall? But Hetty, listen to everything Lady Grenford says, her information might come in handy for finding the Dawn Star! Dear U17682826, Thanks for your letter. It sounds like you know Lady Grenford well! I think Mrs Calendar is just being kind to her– which is very nice, of course. But it means we all have to be suspicious now - and watch everything we do or say! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Two letters on parchment, text reads: OpalClover: I have a feeling that Lady Grenford has something to do with the new butler. She may have sent them to spy and find out what is going on. This may also mean that she has come to look for the Dawn Star. If I were you I would keep my head down and eyes peeled. Dear OpalClover, Thanks for your letter. To find out if Lady Grenford knows Mr. Ambrose, I’d have to ask questions – and that could cause trouble! I hope we don’t have anyone spying here. It sounds exciting in a story but is scary in real life! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Two letters on parchment, text reads: NatureLovingErin: Hmmm... I kind of feel she is interested in the Dawn Star. I saw that face she made when you guys mentioned it! I would be kind to her, but I definitely wouldn't trust her, she doesn't look 100% honest to me. Dear NatureLovingErin, Thanks for your letter. I’m not sure what Lady Grenford knows about the Dawn Star – maybe nothing at all! I will be kind to her of course, and polite too – it’s my job. But you’re right, I can’t trust Lady Grenford completely! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Two letters on parchment, text reads: U17597471: She may or may not be pretending to be sick, her coughs did look a bit fake. Just watch your back, if she has her eye on you she'll pounce at any point. Especially if you’re looking for the stone. I think she might working for Master Ashok. Dear U17597471, Thanks for your letter. Lady Grenford does like lots of attention – but why pretend to be ill? But whether she’s pretending or not, she’s here now. That means, if we search for the Dawn Star, we have to be clever - and very careful! Yours, Hetty Feather
Two letters on parchment, text reads: ImaginePonies: I think she wants you to get into trouble so that she would not be the only one who isn’t trusted at Calendar Hall. Maybe if you trusted her then she would try to be less troublesome. Dear ImaginePonies, Thanks for your letter. If I get into trouble, then it’s serious - my job’s on the line! I’m going to do my best to work as hard and as well as I can. Perhaps if I’m the best servant I can be then Lady Grenford will trust me for a change! Yours, Hetty Feather.
Two letters on parchment, text reads: U17451233: I think that Lady Grenford has stolen the jewel but she is sneaky enough to pretend she does not know anything. Also you should not go to New York so you can find the Dawn Star. Dear U17451233, Thanks for your letter. I certainly hope Lady Grenford hasn’t stolen the Dawn Star – that would be awful! I don’t understand how people can ever be sneaky. It’s far better to have friends and have fun – and some adventures too! Yours, Hetty Feather.
