Summary of complaint
We received complaints about our article Israel carries out air strikes on Gaza after Hamas fires rockets. Some readers complained that the article’s original headline: Gaza air strikes follow heaviest rocket fire by Hamas in months failed to explicitly identify Israel as launching the air strikes and when read in conjunction with the original introduction, implied a causal link between the air strikes and rocket fire, when Israeli air strikes on Gaza have been ongoing for weeks.
Our response
After considering these points we amended the article’s headline and introduction to more precisely reflect the wider context to the intensified violence.
We have also added an update note advising readers of the change.
