Summary of complaint

We received complaints about our article Israel changes account of Gaza medic killings after video showed deadly attack. Some readers felt that the article’s original headline: Israel admits mistakes over medic killings in Gaza was inaccurate, misleading and promoted an IDF narrative not supported by the evidence.

Our response

Some readers contacted us after the article was published to object to the original headline, in the belief that it amounted to unquestionably accepting an Israeli narrative that the killings themselves were a mistake.

However as the article went on to explain, Israel’s admission of a mistake concerned their original claim that troops opened fire because the convoy approached "suspiciously" in darkness without headlights or flashing lights.

As the article also explained, this account was subsequently contradicted by the release of mobile phone footage filmed by one of the paramedics who was killed, which showed the vehicles did have lights on as they answered a call to help wounded people.

We later amended the headline to say “Israel changes account of Gaza medic killings,” which gives more context and more clearly summarises the story.

Although it is a standard practice for the headline and text on a breaking news story to be updated in the hours after publication, we have discussed your concerns about the original wording with senior editors.
