BBC News website, Eid celebration 'can be lonely' for Muslim converts, 4 April 2025

Summary of complaint

We received complaints from people who were unhappy that the article originally used the words “reverts” on several occasions when describing people who have converted to Islam, rather than “converts.”

Our response

The article was updated to now refer to “converts” and we have also added a note advising readers of the change:

Update 16th April: This article originally included several references to “reverts” when referring to individuals who have converted to Islam, reflecting the language used by the people we spoke to. On 5th April we amended the article to instead refer to “converts” to Islam, which is a more generally understood description, and added an additional paragraph giving further context on the use of word “reverts” by some Muslims.

One use of the word ‘reverts’ remains as part of a direct quote from one of the interviewees: "Now I feel like reverts do our own thing, instead of looking for acceptance."
