BBC News, audio of translation of Pope Leo XIV's speech, 8 May 2025

Summary of complaint

We've received complaints from people who were unhappy with the audio of the translation on the BBC News Channel of Pope Leo XIV's speech at the Vatican. Some queried whether it may have been conducted by AI.

Our response

The translation of the Pope's first speech was provided by a person translating from Rome. However, unfortunately a poor internet connection distorted the voice coming through for audiences.

Given the historic moment taking place, we made the decision to stick with the translation, rather than coming away from it, as we felt it was better to have translation than not.

We're sorry if this disrupted the enjoyment of anyone watching.
