Complaint
A viewer complained the programmeâs conclusions were misleading and biased because they failed to investigate key evidence about the identity of a man suspected of being Lord Lucan. Â The ECU considered whether the broadcast met the editorial standards for accuracy and impartiality set out in the BBC Editorial Guidelines.
Outcome
The programme team followed the son of the murdered nanny Sandra Rivett in his attempt to find out what had happened to Lucan and if he might still be alive.
In the ECUâs view the programme did not have a conclusive ending and it was clear to viewers there was some evidence a man found in Australia might be Lord Lucan, as well as credible evidence that he might not be. Â But ultimately it was a matter of editorial judgement which evidence the programme makers chose to include and which to leave out.Â
