Panorama: E-bikes: The Battle for Our Streets, BBC One, 6 January 2025

Complaint

A viewer complained the programme misleadingly claimed e-bikes were a green form of transport and their use cut carbon emissions.  The ECU considered the complaint against the standards for accuracy set out in the BBC Editorial Guidelines.

Outcome

The programme considered several different aspects of the ownership and use of e-bikes including growth in popularity, safety, speed, illegal modifications and illegal usage.  It explained such bikes can be rented in some towns and cities, as well as being privately owned.  The question of whether e-bikes were a green form of transport was marginal to this agenda, and the programme contained only one explicit reference to the green aspect of using bikes and e-bikes.  The ECU found the reference accurately reflected a number of scientific studies which indicate e-bikes can contribute overall to a reduction of carbon emissions when used to replace car travel, especially in rural areas.
