Complaint
A representative of Gloucestershire NHS Health Trust complained about an investigation into the way the Trust had handled whistleblowing allegations by a surgeon at Bath’s Royal United Hospital. The ECU considered whether the broadcasts met the editorial standards for accuracy and impartiality set out in the BBC Editorial Guidelines.
Outcome
The complaint focused on the way the BBC had conducted its inquiries, alleging this had resulted in the journalists concerned closing their minds to important evidence. However, in the absence of any specific concerns raised over the content of either broadcast, the ECU concluded there was no evidence of a breach of the standards set out in the Editorial Guidelines. It also considered the manner in which the investigation was carried out had been fair to contributors and potential contributors.
