For some peculiar cosmic reason, there are three Beatles events to choose from on January 19. It doesn’t matter which you attend; you can’t miss, as the music is firmly rooted in that rare but happy sweet spot where all generations connect and enjoy. All together now.
THE FULL PEPPER
Symphony Space, 212-864-5400
The New York pop group Bubble mark the 40th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by performing the full album for a new generation of potential fans. Expect a full orchestra plus sitars and tablas. Bonus: They’ll play “Penny Lane” and “Strawberry Fields Forever,” the double-A-side single bumped from the album. Don’t be surprised if there are a lot of large children (um, adults) in the audience. Though Bubble have done other Beatles albums, this is their first time rocking the Pepper.
YESTERDAY PLUS EGGS
B.B. King Blues Club & Grill, 212-997-4144
Strawberry Fields, the Beatles tribute band made up of former cast members of Broadway’s Beatlemania, do a “magical mystery tour” of albums at B.B. King as families chow down on an all-you-can-eat brunch. They even change costumes as the albums progress (ranging from black suits to hippie gear). They’ll belt out favorites from Sgt. Pepper, The Beatles (a.k.a. The White Album), Abbey Road, and Let It Be in Liverpudlian accents, while playing period-correct vintage instruments.
A BIT OF SWING
The Triad, 212-362-2590
Blair Casdin, chanteuse and mother of two, puts on “An It’s Not Kids’ Music Music Show for Kids (And Their Parents!)” at the Triad. Her covers are by no means Beatles specific—she goes from Cole Porter to Billy Preston—but “Your Mother Should Know” is on her album Cheek to Cheek: Sophisticated Songs for Jazzy Parents. See if she’ll take requests.
