Oscar de la Renta left the Dominican Republic at 18 to study painting in Madrid, where he became interested in the world of design and began sketching. He left Spain to go work in Paris, and eventually went to New York to design the couture collection for Elizabeth Arden. Two years later, he launched his own ready-to-wear label. Over the past thirty years, the Oscar de la Renta label has grown to include an extensive selection of products based on his signature style. In addition to his signature line, de la Renta's ventures include a high end sportswear collection (OSCAR by Oscar de la Renta), cosmetic cases, eyewear, furs, jewelry, lingerie, scarves, sleepwear and swimwear. For men, de la Renta licenses products including sport-coats, suits and trousers. His eponymous perfume was launched in 1977 and is the best-selling fragrance in more than 70 countries. In addition to his duties with his fashion empire, he serves as a board member of the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, Channel Thirteen/WNET and Hispanic Designers. He is also on the boards of UNICEF, the Americas Society and the Spanish Institute.
