I like your braids.
They connect me to my childhood. They also serve a practical purpose. I have to braid my hair to fit it underneath my wigs and headpieces for my performance work.
What kind of performance art do you do?
It’s a mixture of contemporary dance and elaborate costumes and props. Onstage, I shield my identity, so I can’t tell you everything about my performance character.
So you’re disguised when you perform?
Yeah, nobody knows it’s me. Nobody? I’d say my family and friends and a handful of people in New York.
Do you always have an alibi when you’re performing?
Mm-hmm.
Will there be a day when you reveal yourself?
I hope not.
