A permanent HEPA filter cuts down on the replacement costs. That and the easy-to-stash tower design make it our favorite filter (Honeywell HEPAClean Tower, $220 at Target, 139 Flatbush Ave., at Atlantic Ave., Boerum Hill; 718-290-1109).

Expensive, but so quiet, and the pulsing mood light makes the RabbitAir MinusA2 look like a W Hotel accessory ($460 at rabbitair.com).

Honeywell’s oscillating purifier emitted a slight burning-plastic odor for one day, along with a gentle breeze ($150 at Best Buy, 622 Broadway, nr. Houston St.; 212-673-4067).

Reminiscent of Darth Vader, but without the constant wheeze, this is the quietest of the bunch (Airfree Onix, $269 at allergybegone.com).
