Careful Where You Sit
Soho’s Cristina Grajales Gallery turns its showroom over to the hot young Chilean-born designer Sebastian Errazuriz for “Beautiful Premonitions,” a 21-piece exhibit of strikingly unusual, often animalistic furniture, opening tomorrow. Errazuriz creates cabinets, shelves, desks, and more out of unlikely materials, such as piano keys, while referencing traditional Japanese art, the Batmobile, and, in the case of the above cabinet set, porcupines (10 Greene St., nr. Folk-Modern Mash-ups
A host of design superstars will be represented at the Museum of Arts and Design’s new show, “Are You a Hybrid?” opening Tuesday. Furnishings and decorative objects from Stephen Burks, Jasper Morrison, and Patricia Urquiola will mingle with a few mid-century throwbacks by the likes of Charles and Ray Eames and Isamu Noguchi thrown in. Each piece was chosen to demonstrate how folk art has made its way into modern and contemporary designs. A number of videos, including Burks’s documentary project about his design collaborations in Haiti, Senegal, and South Africa, will play throughout the exhibit (2 Columbus Cir. at Broadway; 212-299-7777; 5/3–10/2).
The Upper West Souk
One hundred design professionals from around the country will be peddling their wares at Crafts on Columbus, an annual fair of artisanal goods spanning a four-block stretch of the Upper West Side. Handmade objects, ranging from blown glass to furniture, are for sale through the next three weekends (Columbus Ave., btw. 77th and 81st; 212-866-2239; 4/30, 5/1, 5/7, 5/8, 5/14, and 5/15).
Calling All Screwballs
Red Hook artist haven Screwball Spaces is openings its doors to the public this weekend, welcoming visitors to view many of the 99 artist workspaces within the 40,000-square-foot former paint-manufacturing plant. More than 70 artists from an array of disciplines, including ceramics and woodworking, will be displaying their paintings, photography, and sculptures in the warehouse’s gallery (183 Lorraine St., nr. Clinton St., Red Hook, third fl.; 718-938-5505; 4/30–5/1, 12-6 p.m.).
