The bite-size home-design shop Overbey and Dunn, at 19 Christopher Street (overbeyanddunn.com), has a new installation called “Gentleman/Boudoir,” created by decorator Russell Piccione. “It is not for nothing that Marcus Aurelius sits in the window,” Piccione says. “The installation is grounded in classicism.” The first thing I spied on the radicchio-and-black-painted walls was this wonderful portrait. Though it looks very much like a painting by thirties artist Bernard Boutet de Monvel, it is in fact a contemporary photograph by English artist Steven Gontarski, who lives in the Netherlands and combines classic technique with street iconography. As Piccione puts it, “The result is punk/Memling and terribly cool.” I’ll say. The one-of-a-kind throw pillows are $275 to $475 each. Photo: Wendy Goodman
