The annual beachfront Mermaid Parade was in danger of cancellation after Hurricane Sandy washed away much of Coney Island until more than 2,000 backers scrounged together $100,000. An organizer for the costumed festivities told Gothamist that the final Kickstarter hurdle will be reached thanks to funds raised by a Bowery Ballroom benefit concert headlined by the very polarizing Amanda Palmer. Everyone, on the other hand, can glean some enjoyment out of a day at the beach featuring grown people dressed as sea creatures.
