Following in the footsteps of Nate Silver and Ezra Klein (as well as Bill Keller, though he denies it) on Wednesday, Matt Taibbi announced he’s leaving Rolling Stone to start his own publication at First Look Media. The company, which is financed by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, just launched its first digital magazine, a publication devoted to reporting on Edward Snowden’s leaks (for the time being). Taibbi’s unnamed site will focus on financial and political corruption. He’ll write and edit the publication, and plans to “bring in talented writers who can have fun with the subject in addition to producing solid investigative journalism.” “It’s obvious that we’re entering a new phase in the history of journalism,” Taibbi said. “This is clearly the future, and this was an opportunity for me to be part of helping to found something and create something that might carry us into the next generation.” From now on, journalists who want to make an edgy career move should head to the oldest print publication they can find.
