New York Magazine’s recent feature story and survey of 100 Republican voters in Iowa and New Hampshire captured the faces and disparate opinions of Americans, who, by dint of geography, are aggressively courted every four years by presidential hopefuls. But photographer Benedict Evans, who shot New York’s portraits of primary and caucus voters, also directed his lens to the fringes of these well-trodden campaign trails. Evans says he was struck by the disparity between what voters and the media see — crowded rallies, a town hall punctuated with talking points — and what goes on behind the scenes of the GOP race. His series pieces together those often-unnoticed moments that make up the backdrop of the campaign circus. — Jen Kirby
