Profile
Since its founding as an artist collective in 1965, Dance Theater Workshop (DTW) has been focused on interdisciplinary and/or genre-defying works that have helped to redefine post-modern dance. Today, although the institution is no longer artist-run, the Bessie Schönberg Theater continues to further that mission with over 200 performancesat least 40 of which are commissioned in-house. A complete overhaul of the building in 2001 added two rehearsal studios and a media lab where fellows can incorporate dance into visual arts or create digital backdrops for their choreography. The performance space itself seats 184, double the previous capacity, and even features water pipes for heating the floor so dancers won't get cold feet. That's an advantage that alum such as Bill T. Jones, Mark Morris, Whoopi Goldberg and Bill Irwin probably never even imagined.
