Profile

Viewed from the South, Saint Peter's somber granite structure appears to defy the hulking Citigroup building which stands cantilevered abovea pleasing irony given that the church (built in 1977) exists only because Citigroup bought the air-rights overhead. Inside, the church expands downward from its fortress-like exterior. While a huge skylight bisects the roof, the main sanctuary and offices are situated below street level with an off-Broadway theater seating 178 lying underneath that. In the modernist sanctuary, designed and decorated by Vignelli Associates, a red oak ceiling, cheerfully patterned, cushioned pews, white walls, and an enormous organ combine to create a sense of openness in tune with the progressive Evangelical Lutheran congregation. St. Peter's supports an extensive music program: an excellent choir, a Bach festival, a series of weekly jazz and classical music concerts, and a Jazz ministry. The church's large collection of art features works by Louise Nevelson, Kiki Smith, and Dale Chihuly. Rotating shows in the reception area further testify to the church's well-known devotion to the arts.

Extra

The Chapel of the Good Shepherd was designed by Louise Nevelson whose signature white-painted wooden sculptures invoke contemplation.
