Like Coney Island without the honky-tonk nostalgia, the mile-long boardwalk on the central New Jersey Shore is crammed with carnival games, blipping arcades, shooting ranges with human targets, and teenagers who may or may not have grown up Gotti. There are also kid-friendly waterparks, miniature golf courses, carousels, and dozens of places to buy funnel cakes, cheesesteaks, and stop-your-heart fried Oreos and ice cream. The main beach, flanked on both sides by amusement-filled piers, is pretty much an afterthought. Crowds thin north of the Casino Pier (with $3 showers on the far north end), but if you really want to escape the chaos, head a mile upshore to peaceful Lavallette Beach with its white sands.
