Profile

Ruth Zukerman, one of the original founders of the other popular spinning studio in town, SoulCycle, branched off and founded Flywheel in Flatiron in the spring of 2010. Stadium seating, RPM-tracking bikes, and flat screens posting participants’ performances are what sets this spinning studio apart from the others, creating a friendly-competition atmosphere during the vigorous 45-minute classes. Since its opening, the company has expanded substantially, opening Upper West Side and Sag Harbor outposts, acquiring spinning studio Ride the Zone, and adding a barre class to the roster. Called Flybarre, the one-hour class is akin to other Lotte Berk classes but on speed, quickly moving from free weight reps, abdominal sequences, to thighs and squats on the barre, without a lot of transition time, making for a heart rate-raising experience.

Pros

RPM-tracking bikes and flat screens posting performances really push participants to do their best.

Cons
Although there is a weight sequence, spinning classes don’t incorporate arm and abdominal work as much as others.
