Profile
The first thing to know about the French-run Sofitel is its pronunciation: SEW-fi-tel (after all, the French tend to be sticklers for pronunciation). The 29-story, curved limestone tower holds 398 small units with only enough space for a bed, a table and a chair. The custom headboards made from bird's-eye maple are admittedly impressive, and the top floors, added in 2000, have private balconies and lovely views. Parisian interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon has given 1940s Art Deco a modern twist, creating a European Art Deco meets New York tourist hybrid. Translation: Expect lots of black-and-whites of The Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower.
Pros
The lobby features an impressive collection of more than two-dozen rare and exotic flowers, changed weekly.
Cons
The lobby's muzak sounds like the worst of Euro-club techno.
