Designed by Ian Schrager then outfitted by Philippe Starck, the Paramount Hotel is a time capsule of late-20th century chic. Rooms are awash in blinding white, from the linens to the marbletop tables to the regal, straightback chairs (more pleasing to the eye than the rear). The closest you’ll get to visual variation is the black-and-white checkered carpeting underfoot. Should you tire of squeezed monochromatic quarters, take refuge in the lobby where a grand staircase with a glass-walled banister touches down in a landscape of mismatched furnitureďż˝fuschia couches, rustic armchairs, and sleekly lacquered mahogany desks. The best place to observe your fellow Samsonite-toting families and young, romantic couples is from the mezzanine; the best place to escape them is at the Library Bar or at the hotel’s eponymous watering hole.
ProsYou can’t get more central than Times Square.
Cons
The small rooms are not ideal for large families.
