Review

One of the rare coming-out films centered around a female character, Rees’s raw, highly compelling, partially autobiographical full-length directorial debut follows Alike (Adepero), a middle-class young black lesbian discovering her sexuality in Fort Greene. Wayans turns in a heartbreaking performance as the conflicted mother and Walker is excellent as Alike’s ultra-butch best friend, but the film belongs to newcomer Adepero in the main role.
