It was like the sound of a body dropped from a bell tower hitting the ground, heard the world over. Citizen Kane, for decades reckoned the best film of all time in a Sight & Sound poll of critics, filmmakers, and cinephiles, had been pushed aside in the latest by Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. This week, you can see Kane until September 11 at Film Forum, after which the new champ gets a triumphant run. Could these two masterpieces be less similar? Kane is tricky, extroverted, cinematic, and theatrical. Vertigo is turgid, morbidly introspective, brimming with the sort of appearance-versus-reality motifs that are mother’s milk to academics. Both, however, center on lonely men�like the critics who cast most of the S&S votes. — David Edelstein
