The inventive, Amsterdam-based home-furnishings company fills its first U.S. showroom with rare objects like a chair crafted from layers of colorful rags, a golden silicone tablecloth, and a rotten-wood wall shelf sprouting tarnished tin mushrooms. Created by Dutch interior-design company Studio Makkink & Bey, the focal point of the two-level space is the so-called House of Blue, a sprawling, multiroom foam structure with various seating, lighting, and decorative concepts. Gauzy blue curtains hang from the ceiling, dividing the industrial space into smaller, gallerylike sections. Downstairs, detachable tables and chairs jut out from one wall, and a whimsical swing crawling with leafy vines hangs from the ceiling. (The seat can be opened and planted with seeds.) Though most items are priced in the thousandsand many are listed as price upon requestmore affordable glassware and clever decorative accents are shelved near the register, like ornamental tape printed to look like a gilded frame, a bathmat with built-in slippers, and a glass vessel with two curvy spouts for vinegar and oil.
