Profile
For a line that started out making women’s clothing, Brooklyn design company Epaulet, which provides American style with a slight British twist, has definitively shifted gears. At their second location (the first in Manhattan) a quarter of the space is reserved for women but the rest is decidedly male-oriented, with racks of men’s shirts, trousers, and jackets displayed amid the very masculine aroma of Baxter candles (female shoppers can also cull through a selection of statement jackets, bags, and contemporary clogs). Adele Berne and Michael Kuhle, the husband and wife team behind the shop, pride themselves on updated classics for the business-casual set, which means the ties are slim, the button-ups have colorful patterns, and the wool cardigans are handmade in Europe. Much of the merchandise comes from in-house brand EP’s and the slightly more upscale Epaulet, and all of it is meticulously sourced, with the clothing made domestically whenever possible.
