Profile
Renowned art dealer Larry Gagosian opened this pop-art boutique and bookstore just a couple of doors north of his eponymous Upper East Side gallery in September 2009. The gray-tone, sparsely decorated shop exhibits a curator’s touch, with smart accent lighting highlighting artful pieces for the home, like Marc Newson's marble furniture series or a shapely Richard Prince Nurse Hat chair. Though the striking offerings range from affordable bedroom wares (a $20 Lichtenstein poster) to amateur collectors' items (signed litho prints by Damien Hirst for $275) to bona fide rarities (Warhol's Polaroid self-portrait, $25,000), the main commodity here is weighty hardcover art tomes on Modernist art figures like Jeff Koons, Bob Colacello, and Roger Ballen. Descend a stairway lined with wildly patterned floral wallpaper to explore "Other Criteria," the first incarnation of Damien Hirst's collaborative publishing company outside of its London flagship store. Part gallery, part boutique, the downstairs space mainly sells limited-edition Hirst works, including familiar painted skull sculptures as well as more obscure offerings, like shiny silver wallpaper dotted with thousands of quirkily named prescription pills ("the Birth of Moses" or "the Creation of the World").
