Dominating the entire block of Park Row between Ann and Beekman Streets is a string of storefronts (nine to be exact) known collectively as J&R Music and Computer World. J&R has grown from its humble music-store beginnings in the early 1970s to a consumer-electronics emporium that can rightfully claim a spot among the city’s landmarks. Going here is a rite of passage for locals and tech tourists, and everyone seems to stop in at some point to scope out the four floors of photo and video equipment, computers, home-entertainment systems, and mobile phones. Satellite outposts carry music and movies, home appliances, office equipment, car stereos, and navigation equipment. Shopping here is nothing like a trip to a sleepy big-box electronics retailer: It gets as crowded as the subway platform at rush hour and deal-making sales staff can make your head spin. Whether you are in the market to buy, or simply come to experience the frenzy, you won’t leave disappointed.
Key Departments
In addition to the brick-and-mortar store, J&R offers excellent on-line shopping on their well designed Web site. A satellite store (carrying a limited range of mobile phone and iPod accessories) occupies a small space in the basement of Macy’s at Herald Square.
