Profile
Wondering where you can find that sleek tennis dress Maria Sharapova wore at the U.S. Open? Or the Aeropro Drive racquet favored by Raphael Nadal? Head straight for Mason’s, where the tennis-mad staff won’t just help you find the right racket; they’ll string it for you, chat your ear off about Roger Federer, and even suggest the best doctors for tennis elbow. Tennis enthusiast Mark Mason founded the full-service emporium on Seventh Avenue in 1974, and since then it’s catered to New York’s tennis addictsincluding celebs like Robert DeNiro and Tony Bennett. In 1999, the store moved to a 1,300 square-foot space just off Madison Avenue, where life-size photographs of Serena Williams and her ilk adorn floor-to-ceiling windows, and flat-screen TVs show live matches and interviews on the Tennis Channel. You’ll find the latest equipment here from Prince, Wilson and Babolat, plus wristbands, bags, and assorted U.S. Open paraphernalia. Mason’s also stocks fashionable court attire from Nike, Tail, Fila, and Adidas, as well as more sideline-appropriate pieces, like cable-knit sweaters and jackets from Ralph Lauren.
