A relative newcomer to the retail wine revolution, Moore Brothers has expanded its established two-store Philadelphia-area business to stake out a particularly wine-deprived corner right here in New York. In the spare, chilly, cellar-temperature (56 degrees) store, shoppers find only French, German, and Italian wines sourced from small producers (6,000 cases a year or less). The Moores, who scour the various countrysides for good values, import the wines themselves, so although the name of the producers of, say, a Puligny-Montrachet or Amarone may not ring a bell, the fact that the owners control the supply chain from vineyard to store means that the wine’s likely to be in top form. Prices are fair, with plenty of bottles under $15. Bolstered by an appealing yet unobtrusive staff, who are close at hand with advice, tasting notes, and vineyard profiles for each wine they carry, Moore Brothers offers oenophiles and casual sippers a well-honed selection of European boutique wines, well-suited to occasions simple, formal, and in-between.
Parents WelcomeWorried that your toddler might pull that magnum of expensive bubbly down on her pretty little head? Moore Brothers provides a child’s play area in full view of shoppers.
