Profile
Steps away from the Smith Street restaurant scene, an oval sign on tree-lined Dean Street proclaims, simply, "Cookies." An edible labor of love for a former Barneys manager who cherished the flavors and aromas of her grandmother's kitchen, One Girl Cookies began in 2000 when Dawn Casale started taking orders out of her West Village apartment. Since 2005, One Girl’s occupied this pleasantly chic little café and bake shop; enlarged, sepia-toned, vintage photographs of grandmother Casale warm the walls, and a team of cookie makers busily bakes in the back. The cookies themselves all have girls' names: Lucia is a layered bar of shortbread, caramel, and chocolate; Susanna, a spicy oat cookie with crystallized ginger; and Olga, two sugar cookies sandwiching a chocolate-mint ganache. The treats come packed in little brown gift boxes that can be customized (with photos, vintage papers, color-themed details, and flourishes of fancy ribbons) for special birthdays and celebrations. The shop also makes biscotti and brownies that go quite well with an espresso at the counter.
ExtraOne Girl ships cookies across the U.S. and can create personalized boxes and orders for weddings and other special events; order at least two weeks ahead (three weeks during the holiday season). Seasonal pies, birthday cakes and sweet treats can also be ordered in advance but can’t be shipped.
