Time was when Radio Shack was the exclusive domain of computer dorks, ham radio nerds and A/V geeks. But times have changed; today, tech is chic, and electronica, ubiquitous, even for mere lay folk. And so, while Radio Shack still sells enough wires and connectors, fuses and bulbs, transistors and capacitors, soldering irons and screwdrivers to give Bunsen Honeydew a headache, it’s become a store for the masses, too, selling stereos and flat screen TV’s from all the major brands, LifeWise brand air purifiers, and electronic massagers. Modern-day standards like digital still and video cameras, printers, computer keyboards, lap- and desktops and PDAs sit alongside less-routine items like digital voice recorders and networking tools, video surveillance paraphernalia, universal remote controls, karaoke machines and electronic keyboards. In many ways, the Shack is like a high-tech hybrid between Home Depot and Staples. Plus, it’s an authorized retailer for Virgin Mobile and Sprint PCS cellular phones, with a generous selection of cellular accessories on hand, too. — Andrew Sessa
