Profile

With an eclectic mix of decorative art glass, paisley-print silk ties, amber jewelry, and hand-pressed stationery, The Shop @ Scandinavia House puts designers from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden, and Norway front and center. The contents of the white cubbyholes and museum-shop shelving of this one-room storejust past the cultural center’s colorful ground-floor caféchanges several times a season. Crayfish loomed into kitchen linens recall the midsummer festivals of Sweden; Alvar Aalto’s distinctive vases echo Scandinavia’s many lakes; and a striking bracelet handmade from reindeer leather evokes northern Finland. In warmer months, tangerine and turquoise wallets are common, along with apple-print umbrellas and cotton blankets (suggestively stored near picnic-ready Nordic nibbles and bottles of glögg). In winter, the inventory turns to thick mohair blankets and chunky knit sweaters, and with extensive holiday ornament and gift offerings too. Trunk shows and designer appearances fill the shop year-round.
