Owner Christine Onorati had a bookstore out on Long Island before moving to Greenpoint and opening this shop with a meticulously selected assortment of titles well suited to the neighborhood. Among the highlights is the front-of-store section for �Food Lit,� a vegetarian-heavy section of cookbooks, and the young-person’s nook in the back featuring books for tots to young adults. The biggest draw, however, may be on the blond-wood fiction shelves, where small placards with punchy reviews from staffers help browsers venture off the beaten track. There’s also a massive collection of boxed note cards and Murakami-esque stationery. And in its small downstairs space, Word hosts a tri-monthly book club, author readings, and co-sponsored events with local indie presses like Akashic. — Alex Littlefield
